Chuck the Librarian: IST 511 - Day 5
http://chuckthelibrarian.blogspot.com/2009/07/ist-511-day-5.html
The life and times of an MSLIS student. Saturday, July 25, 2009. IST 511 - Day 5. Well, this was the last day of "boot camp" for the iSchool at Syracuse. It has been an interesting experience and has helped me on so many levels. I had some interesting discussions on the future of libraries, met new people, made new friends, and came away more energized and excited that I've felt in a long time. I'm ready to get out there and learn! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). NPR: Wait Wait. Don't Tell Me!

Chuck the Librarian: IST511 - Day 1 impressions
http://chuckthelibrarian.blogspot.com/2009/07/ist511-day-1-impressions.html
The life and times of an MSLIS student. Tuesday, July 21, 2009. IST511 - Day 1 impressions. I enjoyed the searching lecture, and really hope to exand my knowledge in this subject. I have a decent understanding of query construction already from a CompSci perspective. My issue is learning how these library system databases work. In the CompSci world, you have to have a good grasp of the schema before they let you query the database. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). NPR: Wait Wait. Don't Tell Me! Interv...

Chuck the Librarian: February 2010
http://chuckthelibrarian.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
The life and times of an MSLIS student. Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Books, what are they good for (in a library)? At least that's what some school and library deans seem to believe. In today's Opinion of The New York Times, the editors ask the question, " Do school Libraries Need Books? The first sentence tries to frame the commentary thus: "Keeping traditional school libraries up to date is costly, with the constant need to acquire new books and to find space to store them.". At any rate, this is simi...

Chuck the Librarian: Heretical thoughts on Internet filtering
http://chuckthelibrarian.blogspot.com/2009/07/heretical-thoughts-on-internet.html
The life and times of an MSLIS student. Saturday, July 25, 2009. Heretical thoughts on Internet filtering. Should school and public libraries filter the Internet? Do librarians not "filter" content in their libraries through selection? Do they not choose which titles their patrons will have access to and which titles they will not find in the library based upon the needs of the community? Internet filtering should be viewed as a sort of collection deaccession for the Internet. Yes, I do realize that no s...

Chuck the Librarian: IST 511 - Day 4
http://chuckthelibrarian.blogspot.com/2009/07/ist-511-day-4.html
The life and times of an MSLIS student. Friday, July 24, 2009. IST 511 - Day 4. The afternoon lecture was about expectations of patron privacy, intellectual freedom, and ethics. As a (former) card-carrying member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Library Association's code of ethics is somewhat familiar. I'm glad to say that I agree with everything the ALA's code of ethics stands for! Oops, almost forgot about the three S's of controversy: sex, satan, and suicide. Best of Not My Job.

The life and times of an MSLIS student. Thursday, July 23, 2009. IST 511 - Day 3. Today was library systems day, hooray! Now that I'm typing this, I wonder if the hide glue is too rigid for a book. Chuck the Librarian: IST 511 - Day 2
http://chuckthelibrarian.blogspot.com/2009/07/ist-511-day-2.html
The life and times of an MSLIS student. Tuesday, July 21, 2009. IST 511 - Day 2. The two speakers today were great. I'm still not sure whether I'd prefer working in a specialized or academic library. I like dealing with technology and adapting it to be more user-friendly, so I'm likely looking to be a systems librarian. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). NPR: Wait Wait. Don't Tell Me!
