True oriental lacquer is made from the sap of the lac tree (Rhus Verniciflua), thickened by standing in hot sunlight to allow evaporation, then stained and finally coloured with organic pigments. Between thirty to forty coats are essential to produce a good quality lacquer surface. The studio practices the technique known as japanning , a method developed by European craftsmen in the early 18th century. Japanning is based on the use of pigments and varnishes designed to imitate oriental lacquer.

The art of graining and marbling as a craft in its own right has existed for centuries. Wonderful results can be produced when decorative paint effects are used on their own, or in conjunction with other decorative techniques such as gilding. The studio undertakes client's projects on large surface areas such as walls, floors, ceilings and columns. It can also be used on smaller items such as frames, furniture, panels and screens.

The studio undertakes both new and restoration projects. Gilding is the art of decorating an object with gold leaf. This is achieved by applying a thin covering of gold on to a prepared surface. The technique and tools have changed little since antiquity and its art can be traced back to the Egyptian period. Gilding falls into two main categories which are water gilding and oil gilding.
