Sally Darlison » About Sally

My work explores place and the relationship that we have with place. The journeys we make, both real and metaphorical are explored in my work. As a collage artist I use a variety of media combining fabric, photos, maps, text and various printmaking techniques. I use machine and hand stitch to draw, bind and link. My art practice has evolved from working predominantly in textiles to working with a combination of media drawn together by my love of stitch.

InMy Father’s Shoes 1. Through the Window 2. Through the Window 2. In My Father’s Shoes. In My Father's Shoes, Sally's second solo exhibition, is a reflection on some of the footprints her father left in her life. The images in this work act as metaphors for a bigger journey, that of parenting; of caring; showing the way; following in the footsteps of a wiser, or maybe just more experienced one; but also acknowledging the ability to learn and grow from the child.

Nuts or Megs 2. This body of work is an exploration of both the similarities and differences in three football games. The similarities of the long socks, boots and a game played on grass and the defining differences in style of shorts, leg movement, athletic build, rules and goal posts. The artwork consists of lino prints on paper and silk with collaged elements - including knitted socks, maps of the grounds, rules and first aid instructions.

Through the Window 2. Sailing with the Kombi. Travels with the Kombi. The Travels with the Kombi series was shown in conjunction with In My Father's Shoes. The vehicle for our journeys was the family Kombi, which took on a life of its own in a way that only a kombi can. This work highlights the character of the Kombi, itself journeying through many landscapes both real and imagined.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost. Wandering, exploring, seeking and learning. Traveling allows us to find new places, learn of others, creates empathy, opens our eyes to other ways of living. Wandering isn’t always aimless. Traveling for 3 months through Europe and Morocco in 2012 was the catalyst for my body of work.
