Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Last month, our third grade class said goodbye to our salmon. We successfully released 116 alevin and fry into the Bond Brook in Augusta at the beginning of May. We took a field trip with our class, several chaperones, and our volunteer from Fish Friends, Dr. Peter Kallin. The trickiest part was getting the fish out of the tank! Wednesday, June 3, 2015. We came back from vacation to quite a surprise! We found that our salmon were all alevin, and they had grown quite a bit! When we left they were short, pink, squiggles with tails and eyes. Now they look like little minnows with an egg sac. We know that they are still eating from the egg sac, and will until we release them into the river. Now they swim to try to hide under rocks. Some of them like to hide under the chiller. Monday, April 6, 2015. We have sucked out many eggs because they were dead, but we are hoping to still release many fry into the river in May. We suck them out with a turkey baster, we have to be careful we don't harm the other eggs! Since it is getting warmer outside, the streams are getting warmer. Because of this, we have to raise the temperature in our tank. This way, the fry will be used to the river temperature when we release them. Have you ever raised a salmon in your classroom?

Monday, March 9, 2015. You will never guess who has arrived, our salmon! Getting our salmon eggs was exciting. We will tell you what all of the excitement was about. The eggs are on the bottom of our tank now, in the gravel. They are little pink blobs with black dots. The dots are the salmon eyes. We expect the eggs to hatch at the end of April.
