在日治時期稱為瑪雅峻，源自南鄒族語「MAYAJUN」。戰後初期劃為瑪雅鄉，屬於 高雄縣. 12290;1957年因鄉內的三個村落分別被命名為「民族」、「民權」、「民生」，因此改稱迄今。 近年來原住民自我認同意識抬頭，研議恢復舊名，轄下三村亦恢復尼沙魯（民族村）、瑪雅峻（民權村）、達卡努瓦（民生一村）以及拿努姆（民生二村）名稱。 2007年12月10日於鄉民代表大會正式通過採用那瑪夏鄉（源自Namasia，楠梓仙溪）新鄉名，三村則易名南沙魯（民族村）瑪雅（民權村）及達卡努瓦（民生村）。成為繼阿里山鄉後，第二個正名的原住民鄉。新名稱在報縣政府核備後，定於2008年1月正式使用。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
