Cultures of Migration – S.A.M. from Berlin

Cultures of Migration – S.am from Berlin. April 22, 2015. Like language and culture always appears hand in hand, cultures are presented in a large part through food. People define themselves through what they eat, active or passive. A modern person living in for e.g. Berlin, is sporty and aware of their body. Through that they present themselves on socialmedia plattforms through their food: they post pictures of their chia-seed-pudding or discuss about their veganess. It’s a free world. April 19, 2015.

https://culturesofmigration.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/welcome-2

Welcome to Cultures of Migration ( CULT 454/554. As participants in a research seminar, what you learn from this course will depend greatly on the quality of discussion we have in and out of class. Ideally, class discussion and blogs will reinforce each other, where comments made in one context will be taken up and discussed further in the other. To that end, each of us (myself included! Do you provide enough information to make your opinion clear? Do you provide examples? That we watched in class last w...

Metaphors of belonging, belonging as metaphor | Cultures of Migration

https://culturesofmigration.wordpress.com/2015/02/15/metaphors-of-belonging-belonging-as-metaphor

Metaphors of belonging, belonging as metaphor. Last week in class, we started talking some about authenticity. Many in the music business contrast authenticity and commercial success as though they were mutually exclusive. Part of the concern with authencity is a question of positionality. Where are you speaking from and who are you speaking to? And of course, the even trickier, who do you (claim) to speak for? Behind all of these questions lies a broader question of belonging. “It ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at.” | Cultures of Migration

https://culturesofmigration.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/its-not-where-youre-from-its-where-youre-at

8220;It ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at.”. Where you’re from is connected to your idea of family. And this part of the criticism in Gilroy’s piece. What do we mean by family? Is there anything natural about family? What are the advantages or disadvantages of using the metaphor of family to organize a social movement? Are families really the right model for radical contestation of the existing order? Who has a right to enter? Who gets to decide? What’s expected of those who enter? What conne...

Hosea 2:14-15- I will speak tenderly to her heart. There I will give her her vineyards and make the valley of achor (trouble) to be for her a door of hope and expectation. And she shall sing . It's hard to believe it is over a year since I have written here. We have so many reasons to rejoice! She also has blackening of the skin, lots of small bruises around and under her arms. We saw her Haemotologist today and he said she has developed a late, chronic GVHD which sometimes occurs from the knees down&#46...

Can’t someone else “just do it”. August 11, 2015. For those that know me, know that it’s hard for me to sit still. For those that don’t, must look at my Instagram pics and think I should probably be this amazing athlete with as much as I workout. Well I’m really not! The first time I ran I couldn’t keep up with anyone and in college once I got lapped by second to last place on the track. And I’m still running! So now the new challenge, a triathlon! But I stuck with it and swam a mile. So if it’s be...

Sam From Fire Island. Fire Island, New York (home). My Book Review Blog. Fire Island, New York (home). So, I realized recently how silly it is to start a travel blog without giving context to where you originally come from. If you can’t rep your own place, then can you really rep other peoples’ places? I think not. So without further ado, here is my home. I grew up in a little town called Ocean Beach. On a little island called Fire Island. Which is off the coast of Long Island. Is the fifth tallest in th...

After a few days in Knoxvegas, we rolled up to Louisville to meet Kate, our other new cousin from China. She is a dollbaby. Of course we also saw our favorite Cousin, Leah. Brad, Cheri and Sammy. Sam has come leap...
