Thursday, August 9, 2007. The sense and sound of being underwater. Originally uploaded by sammarin. When I woke up this morning, the house was totally silent. It seemed like you could actually hear the blank space. And then there were a few rusty goose honks outside, and I realized where I was. The underwater feeling might have something to do with my fierce head cold. I slept in and still felt tired. Then I took a bath and ate some all bran, which felt very adult. I plan to dedicate today to. It isn't f...

Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Flat tires, empty pockets. OK, so it is not all I have, obviously, but I did NOT want to go back to the cash machine AGAIN. He showed mercy and told me what I had was enough. I am in Atlanta now and . I can't. Wait. To go. Home! More photos to come on flickr of the end of our trip: Pisco, Islas Ballenas, and the final dinner with our group. once I catch my breath. los viajes de sam marin: Firsts

http://sammarin.blogspot.com/2007/08/firsts.html

Wednesday, August 1, 2007. I caught the list bug from my new friend Beth, who is always making lists of one type or another. (So Beth, have you made that last and most important list yet? At the risk of being perceived as a) melodramatic slash cheesy, b) nationalist, or c) unappreciative of the spontaneity and variety involved in travel to a different country (because I actually LOVED the differences). I am going to make a list of Firsts I Have Particularly Relished Upon My Arrival Home To North America.

Thursday, August 2, 2007. It isn't fall yet, by any measure, but it is AUGUST now. And you know what that means. Thinking about what classes to register for in the fall. Back to school shopping (although I've spent SO much money this summer that I'm going to go easy on this one). New academic-year planners (! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Friday, June 29, 2007. Diana lives on a floating island in Lake Titicaca. Originally uploaded by sammarin. And is totally enchanted by bubble gum. This afternoon we visited her home of Uros. A bunch of about 35 human-made floating islands which are made by people who have lived on Lake Titicaca since way before the 1400s. The islands themselves. And everything on them - houses. The Voyage In: January 2007

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Monday, January 29, 2007. I think the midwives tricked me - in a good way. Origianlly I thought that I would not want Isaiah to be at the birth - he gets scared of intense faces on his Thomas videos and doesn't like gooey things. We're never quite sure what is going to freak him out. Then the midwives gave me some children's books and videos about homebirth. He thought this was hilarious and then asked to do it himself. Thursday, January 25, 2007. That's becaus...

The Voyage In: February 2007

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Wednesday, February 14, 2007. I felt these things so heavily in the days after he was born, that I feared when I saw Rachel on Monday for my five day post-partum visit that I would just cry through the whole thing. Instead, I remembered what she had said about figuring out what the message was for me in this experience. Friday, February 9, 2007. When Josh came to bed, around 10:30, I woke up, feeling kind of crampy and regretting having eaten pizza for dinner&#...

The Voyage In: I'm a WOHMmy again

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2007/05/im-wohmmy-again.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Saturday, May 5, 2007. I'm a WOHMmy again. Naturally, when I headed back to work this time I focused on how it would once again affect my relationship with my baby, this time eight-and-a-half-week-old Milo. I would have to pump my breast milk again - and where was I going to do that? He was sleeping so well for those first eight weeks - would he start reverse cycling so he could spend time with me? Was it right for me to be leaving him at such a young age?

The Voyage In: Milo's Birth Story

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2007/02/milos-birth-story.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Friday, February 9, 2007. Birth is amazing. Giving birth at home was amazing and felt wonderfully normal. On February 7th, 2007 all the planning and preparation I had done over the last nine months with my body, my mind, my midwives, and my family came together and my second beautiful baby boy was born. At 3 am I woke up again, needing to pee, and felt another mini-sploosh. When I went to the bathroom I noticed that the toilet paper was tinged pink. I h...Throu...

The Voyage In: March 2007

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Sunday, March 11, 2007. After I gave birth to Isaiah two-and-a-half years ago, the advice I heard most often was, "Enjoy every minute of it. You blink, and they're all grown up.". I'm trying not to blink with Milo, either, but somehow these first four weeks have passed much, much too quickly. I feel like he should be two weeks old, not almost five, as I hurtle through time towards my return to work. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Thursday, July 19, 2007. Zen and the Art of Being Milo. Recently, I took Milo on a trip to the park with no plans other than to lay on a blanket in the shade. The other mommies around me either had older children who were there to go down the slide and play in the sand, or they were meeting up with friends. I'm usually at the park for those same reasons. Milo's activities were as follows:. Grab edge of blanket. (1 min.). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Voyage In: June 2008

http://orangejanello.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Meandering thoughts about birth and beyond. Thursday, June 12, 2008. I knew the journey wasn’t going to be easy from the very first day. I didn’t expect it to be, and was prepared – I thought - to travel way outside of my comfort zone. On the eve of my first day as a substitute teacher in Oakland I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, “What are you doing? You have no idea how to teach! Was he being unfair? Not everyone uses test prep to teach to the test, but nowadays, like it or not, we do have ...
