These photos depict racers at the track. Training for greyhounds begins on the farm at the age of 13 months. They are taught to chase a dummy lure. They race on a miniature circular track called a whirly. There is an electronic lure or hand held squawker that they will chase after. As soon as they've successfully learned the whirly, they will progress to a real training track.
Broods

In order to have good racers it needs to be in the blood. Broods are selected from a certain or preferred DNA. Three important facts for breeding:. Bloodline selection and matching. A brood and a sire are matched by their bloodlines. The goal is to match two good bloodlines together to make a top racer. Brood health is important for raising and racing healthy pups. They must be wormed on a regular basis. Their teeth must be cleaned twice a year. They need to be exercised regularly.

The first picture shows the new babies nursing on mother. They will nurse until they are approximately six weeks old at which time they will be weaned from the mother. The mothers milk contains colostrum, which provides immunities for the babies. At the age of three months, the pup will be given an identifying tattoo. They will be registered with the NGA. Without any of this, the greyhound will have no racing career. The tattoo and onion skin for a greyhound is much like a birth certificate. Page 1 of 1.
