Craig Rettig's Thoughts: April 2013

Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. By Karl Edward Wagner. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. Fans of Conan need to check this book out, as Wagner writes some brutal fight sequences and has a good imagination for multiple-person battle scenarios. There are also several decent subplots working in this book at all, which is surprising given its short length. All in all, this is a tightly-written book that I really enjoyed. View all my reviews. Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. Review: The Bojeffries Saga. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. Imagine if a downplayed Addams Family/Munsters did a scathing societal satire of modern English (and to a lesser extent, most Western nations) society. In a rare instance of Alan Moore writing humor, "The Bojeffries Saga" is quite funny, even though I'm sure I missed a few England-centric references. View all my reviews. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. Review: Vampires Dont Sparkle! My rating: 4 of 5 stars. As with all anthologies, there are going to be stories you enjoy more than others, but the majority of the stories in this book were enjoyable and a refreshing return to actual horror stories involving vampires. Because some of the proceeds of the book's sales go towards cancer charities, this is definitely a worthy book to add to your collection. View all my reviews. Im a displaced Oh...

Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. Although there were a few minor plot holes and some overly-omniscient narrator syndrome, the action flows pretty well, and the story itself is pretty engaging. Definitely worth the read. Craig Rettig's Thoughts: May 2012

Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. A Princess of Mars. Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs spins this first tale in his lengthy Barsoom. The name for Mars by its inhabitants) saga. Initially written as a serial for the pulp magazines, Burroughs eventually re-edited and collected the stories into a standalone novel. Burroughs's light writing style makes this a quick and easy read, and he has a great imagination for writing this story well in advance of any interstellar travel...

Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. Creatures of Light and Darkness. To save his kingdom, Anubis, Lord of the Dead, sends his servant Wakim on a mission to destroy The Prince Who Was a Thousand. Simultaneously, Osiris, Lord of Life, sends forth his son, Horus, on the same mission. However, neither of them is prepared for the world of mortals, and The Thing That Cries in the Night may well destroy everything, mortal or otherwise. Into popular culture, especially after its use ...

Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. Gary A. Braunbeck paints a visceral tale of child kidnapping and abuse that sticks in your head for days after. While the basic plot of the story is questionable (Why did the kids need Mark to "return" them to their homes? Its execution is extremely well done. Despite the somewhat contrived plot set-up, this book is extremely well-written and is highly recommended for anyone interested in real-world horror. Available at Amazon.com.

Craig Rettig's Thoughts: Review: The Wolf's Hour
http://craighrettig.blogspot.com/2013/10/review-wolf-hour.html
Mostly book reviews. Other stuff might appear occasionally, too. Review: The Wolfs Hour. By Robert R. McCammon. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. This is an all-around, well-written tale. Even if it didn't have the werewolf bits, it would make for a good, WWII-era action/intrigue book. I did like McCammon's take on the supernatural bits, though, so this just made for a fun read.
