Sandy Straits and Beyond

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Lake Alford in Gympie. The other day I visited Lake Alford in Gympie. This is a small lake right next to the highway coming in to Gympie. It is surrounded by well mown lawns, concrete paths and picnic tables. The ponds are filled with all the more common water birds - but these are ones that I don't usually see out here on the bay. They are easy to photograph because they expect hand-outs from visitors! This is a Hardhead (Aythya australis). I only look...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: In My Yard

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/06/in-my-yard.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Tuesday, June 23, 2015. I have a large house block - 2100 sq M. (which is just over half an acre). When I first came here the immediate need was for a fence that would keep my dog and cat at home with me! The easiest and cheapest was a good high wire fence which I then proceeded to hide with a lot of perimeter plantings. After 12 years here I now have lovely green walls that keep growing. One side is now a hedge of Lilly Pillies (. Which has to be trimmed regularly! I planted th...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: Flyways

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/p/flyways.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. There is some over-lap with flyways. Although most birds will follow the same routes down the flyway, there are always some that take a slightly different route and end up in an entirely different place. This is what makes finding a 'rarity' so exciting. In 2007 scientists in New Zealand attached satellite transmitters to Bar-tailed Godwits (Limosa lapponica baueri). And their route is slightly different. You can read about it here and see the map of their tracks. In 2009 geo-lo...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: February 2015

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Monday, February 23, 2015. We drove out to the sea coast. The wind was very strong and the water was really stirred up and dangerous looking. The water right out at Inskip Point was not as high as I have seen it in other years. I wonder if the cyclone north of us was making a difference to the height of the tide. No barges were working - of course! The sand island out in the middle of the bay was completely covered and all that showed was rough water breaking over the area.

Sandy Straits and Beyond: Perfect Weather

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/08/perfect-weather.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Blue skies, sunshine, almost no wind - and even the locals were tempted out onto the water. I had decided to just go for a walk along the shoreline but wished I had gone down with my kayak! Paddle Boards have become popular out here recently but they definitely perform better on calm water! There were also a couple of people on kayaks. There are always numbers of power boats around - plus the occasional sail boat. August 4, 2015 at 5:49 AM. Terrific capt...

Australian Birds Photography: KEUNEA PHOTOGRAPHY: Back to Sterling's Crossing

http://keunea.blogspot.com/2014/08/back-to-sterlings-crossing.html

Australian Birds Photography: KEUNEA PHOTOGRAPHY. Saturday, August 23, 2014. Back to Sterling's Crossing. Over the last few months I have noticed more Sulphur-crested Cockatoos in the area than usual and they are in bigger flocks as well. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are common throughout the area but are often seen in pairs and small flocks of less than 10. There are a couple of flocks of them in the area that have 30 to 50 individuals in them at present. Another Sulphur-crested Cockatoo from the flock.

Australian Birds Photography: KEUNEA PHOTOGRAPHY. Monday, December 24, 2012. From Coles Creek to the Lockyer Valley. Yesterday I had to go down to Ipswich to pick up a few things so I decided to make a day of it and drop in at a few spots and get some photos along the way. Due to such a distance in one day I didn't arrive at optimal times at many of the places but I was still pleased with the species I photographed. One of the Dollarbirds that roost near the house daily. Admittedly I was only there for a...

Australian Birds Photography: KEUNEA PHOTOGRAPHY. Thursday, April 25, 2013. Elusive or Common Birds of the Lockyer Valley. We arrived at the first location before 9 o'clock and we left the Lockyer Valley just after 2 o'clock. It was a glorious day. A warm day of about 29 degrees and hardly a cloud in the sky all day. A perfect day for bird watching. A postcard shot of the Australian Pelicans. Australian Pelicans flying in formation over Seven Mile Lagoon. A Black Swan with some Pink-eared Ducks. Our next...

Australian Frogs Photography: KEUNEA PHOTOGRAPHY. Friday, June 28, 2013. Verreaux's Tree Frogs at My Coles Creek Property. After I was certain that it was a frog I rang a friend to help me look for it. We both looked for it very carefully and we managed to get a few recordings of its call and we got a few nice pictures as well. It was very slow moving when we found it, which was no surprise as it was quite cold the night we looked for it. Verreaux's Tree Frog from the left side. This is a recording of th...
