Il suo nome deriva da una differente pronuncia di Θήρα ([ˈthɛːra] oggi pronunciata [ˈθira]), il nome dell’isola in greco antico, ma un’altra versione ricondurrebbe all’aggettivo fyrros, che nel dialetto dell’isola significa rossastro.
