Subsistence

The Sappony living in High Plains have used our land to grow tobacco. With tobacco as the main subsistence crop, our Indian community was able to maintain itself and remain self-sufficient for almost two centuries. More recently, however, our community could no longer rely on growing the traditional crop of tobacco for its subsistence. Because of our close ties to the tobacco crop, we have placed it in the center of our Tribal insignia.

The High Plains Indian Settlement is located among the rolling hills found between the waters of the Hyco River, Mayo Creek, and Bluewing Creek. The Sappony have been in the High Plains Settlement for well over 250 years and in the Piedmont area of North Carolina and Virginia for countless generations.

The Sappony have about 850 Tribal members who all descend from the seven main families or clans, each with unique but related histories that have enriched our community. One person from each of the seven families serves as a representative on our Tribal Council. The seven feathers found on our Tribal Insignia represent the seven families of the Sappony. Our mission, stated above, is reflected in our current programs and used when considering any new initiatives.
