The landscape is the silent witness that fortifies histories, maintains boundaries and offers traces of evidence in its many layers. Throughout 2014 I photographed The Royal Gunpowder Mills site, exploring the structures and archaeology that remain long after its days as a site of manufacture. Although the landscape is silent, it hints at a turbulent past and at untold narratives that are unveiled discreetly. Alder plantation: The remnants of onsite charcoal production.

Edgelands are the fringes of towns and cities, where urban meets rural and borders are negotiated and renegotiated. They are ever changing. Canals, gravel pits, abandoned cars and industrial decline are all characteristics of places that have the ‘edge’. Gunpowder Park is a country park deep in the heart of the Lee Valley. Today it is beautiful, a modern oasis in the suburbs of London. The land has a secret, dark history. The true beauty of the landscape is in its power. This power serves to remind us of our mortality. As time passes, layer upon layer is added to the landscape while nature continues to reclaim the land. Where does the cycle begin? Where does it end? The living and the dead.

I have been making pictures in and around the Lee Valley area for the past 5 years. However, for the past year I have been exploring the possibility of working with the people on the island itself. My main focus is the history of the island and how the area has evolved into a community since the development of the new housing estate from gun factory.
