English 213 Class Notes. Wednesday, April 18, 2007. Ovid's Metamorphoses can be described by two things. He is the translator of the version of "the golden ass" that we. Also known as The Metamorphoses of Lucius Apuleius or also known as The Transformation. Lucius was the first Mr. Ed. And once again this is a frame story. Along with being influenced by Ovid's Metamorphoses, Shakespeare, was also inspired by the Golden Ass. Cupid and Psyche, in this text, is known as the first telling of cupid and psyche.

English 213 Class Notes. Thursday, April 5, 2007. Don't try to find the moral of the story in the Metamorphoses instead you should be left with the thought of "what's this all about". Art is redemptive, but it does not justify. Shakespeare's sonnet 65 is what we are left with. Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea,. But sad mortality o'er-sways their power,. How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,. Whose action is no stronger than a flower? O, how shall summer's honey breath hold out.

English 213 Class Notes. Wednesday, March 28, 2007. Redemptive power of art. Art redeems us from the horrors of the world because it transforms the world into art. As baby, tried to avoid three things. Shakespeare was inspired by Ovid.try and think of one of his works that doesn't contain any influence from the Metamorphoses. What does Dr. Sexson say that James Joyce, Shakespeare. All have in common. If you read all of their works it can and will transform your life. Is a metaphor for art. What's the wor...

http://www.sarahclassnotes-sarah.blogspot.com/2007/04/test-2-question.html

English 213 Class Notes. Thursday, April 5, 2007. These are the questions that we came up with as a class for the test. if it has an * next to it, it means it may not be on the test or will be rewritten in a way that Sexson finds more fitting. Which birds represent Procne and Philomena. Procne is a swallow. Philomena is a nightingale. What does ate mean. Infatuation to the point of ruin. Who is the original artisan/ artificer. Who is the god of sleep, dreams and disguises. What is Socratic irony. What Sh...

Classical Foundations of Literature. All that is past possesses our present. Monday, April 30, 2007. Taking a look back to the beginning. Well here we are at the end of the semester, it all happened so fast! Well now during the last week of classes i decided to look back through a chronicle to find the past. I hate to say that i came up empty handed. I felt quite discouraged from not being able to do what i had set out to accomplish. We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring.

Classical Foundations of Literature. All that is past possesses our present. Saturday, February 10, 2007. A deeper look into Steiner. Page 232 is full of repetition. Steiner is talking about the five different categories and he uses this page to label those categories in several different ways. He starts on the previous page (231) to label and introduce these five categories. They should seem familiar to everyone who has been coming to class. 1 of men and of women. 2 of age and of youth. 1 men and women.

Classical Foundations of Literature. All that is past possesses our present. Tuesday, April 10, 2007. But - and here you must excuse a horrible idea which i hope nobody will ever put into practice - if you shaved the head of even the most beautiful woman alive and so deprived her face of its natural setting, then i don't care whether she originally floated down from Heaven, and was reborn from sea-foam like the Goddess Venus - i don't even care whether she were Venus herself, with everyone.

Classical Foundations of Literature. All that is past possesses our present. Monday, March 26, 2007. I really liked this story. I think Shakespeare also enjoyed this tale because it seems to have been the inspiration for his Romeo and Juliet. This story was very captivating. Sometimes i think it is hard to get into stories. Classical Foundations of Literature. All that is past possesses our present. Wednesday, April 18, 2007. I realized that i never posted my five lines that I picked from Ovid's Metamorphoses, better late than never. Now, when it wills, the fatal day (which has. Only the body in its grasp) can end. My years, however long or short their span. But, with the better part of me, I'll gain. A place that's higher than the stars: my name,. Indelible, eternal, will remain." (pg. 549).
