Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Guest Blogger: Kerin Backhaus on "Active Expression". Gestation(mass noun): the development of something over a period of time. Time Time can be a sensitive subject, times past can bring us sadness, remorse, and regret. But time can also bring us understanding, reflection, enlightenment and growth. Development, the act of growing, the act of expanding, the act of creating, the capabilities or possibilities of something …. Jug Sketch by Sarah Coffin. The jug fills drop by drop.

The Empty House Studio: March 2013
http://theemptyhousestudio.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Address available upon registration. We are in Alexandria, VA. Monday, March 18, 2013. Preparing for the Worst.or just fixing it. So what about the house? There is a non-working vent fan in the attic with loose metal strips. In certain winds, they flap and bonk. I didn't know about the flapping and bonking. One windy morning at 4am, I woke with a start. Someone with a box of metal torture devices? I thought my time had come. This was it. And metal was going to be involved. The fi...

I didn't know THAT!: Always An X, Never A Y
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2014/04/always-x-never-y.html
I didn't know THAT! Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Always An X, Never A Y. Do you know that expression? Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. What else does it apply to? Today on my errands, I realized another iteration of it is true. ALWAYS A HEADWIND, NEVER A TAILWIND! Yesterday was miserably rainy all day so I stayed inside and did laundry. Today I made up for it by doing all my errands by bike. It was only 15 miles round trip but felt like twice that because of the blasted headwind! April 8, 2014 at 5:16 PM.

I didn't know THAT!: January 2014
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
I didn't know THAT! Saturday, January 25, 2014. Better Results Than the Last Recipe! I made a different layered salad for dinner last night. Everyone liked it and had seconds. There is a tiny bit left over for lunch today but it will be snagged by one of the guys, I'm sure! It turns out I took it for lunch to a meeting I was attending, didn't have time to eat it there, so brought it home and enjoyed it. It was even better the second day! Make this in a glass bowl to really "wow" your audience! I felt a r...

I didn't know THAT!: April 2014
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
I didn't know THAT! Friday, April 11, 2014. Another Great Biking Day. So, I ride that to the W&OD Trail and head west. From there's it's easy-peasy until I get to Ashburn and turn off the trail. Again I'm on local roads, but they're not very busy. And (I confess) I cut through a couple of car dealership parking lots on the way. Hope your day is awesome and your weekend is even more so! Links to this post. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. What a Day, What a Ride. On our way back we went past National Airport and...

I didn't know THAT!: May 2013
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
I didn't know THAT! Friday, May 31, 2013. Almost) Every Day in May - LAST DAY. Today I made it to the end of May with a good ride. I went 19 miles - from my house to Ashburn and back. This is what the bike rack looked like in Ashburn. I took my bike into the store and asked them to have someone move the carts. They did it very promptly. Of course, the butt can is still an affront, but I figured I'd shot my "good" karma. Not so bad going out but pretty hot coming back. I'm still cooling down. One of the b...

I didn't know THAT!: What a Day, What a Ride
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2014/04/what-day-what-ride.html
I didn't know THAT! Wednesday, April 9, 2014. What a Day, What a Ride. I got to ride with my buddy Betty again today. We met at Falls Church, rode through Rosslyn, through Georgetown, along the river, and down to see the cherry blossoms. Today was the 60th anniversary of Marian Anderson singing at the Lincoln Memorial so there was a big hoorah going on there. I'm tired. Enjoy the photos! Jefferson through the cherry blossoms. Betty grins at Lincoln. Nice shot of Washington except for those cranes! Subscr...

I didn't know THAT!: September 2013
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
I didn't know THAT! Monday, September 30, 2013. The town in New Mexico that we visited yesterday is called Mesilla (Meh-see-yuh), and the Old Mesilla plaza is a place for music, art, and awesome food. It is also a little slice of history. This is the old cathedral on the square. Originally it was a mission-style church, but in 1908 a French Catholic order took over, and when it needed repairs, it was done in the style of the French cathedrals. It's called St. Albino. But this is the style of the building.

I didn't know THAT!: Day 3 of 30 Days of Biking
http://southlakesmom.blogspot.com/2014/04/day-3-of-30-days-of-biking.html
I didn't know THAT! Thursday, April 3, 2014. Day 3 of 30 Days of Biking. I was pretty tired and sore after the last two days, but I resolved to bike to my church this morning anyway. I used my errand bike which is a lot heavier, but which allows me to carry the books I needed. It's only about 5 miles each way. On Thursday mornings I volunteer teaching ESOL at the church. I have the most advanced group, which is good, because they ask hard questions! Song or chant together. When we return to our group...
