Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. Growing a family o’ weeds — tumbling along in God’s grace and beauty, planting seeds and raising our faces towards the sun. Make yourself at home. Here, let me clear the papers, the craft projects, the empty water cups from the table. Cuppa tea? Don’t mind the little one pulling on your chair, and the dog is very friendly, just wants to say hi. We’re a little over the top sometimes, over here. That’s how we roll. Years ago, I read this: But the...

Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. July 17, 2015. Campbell c. hoffman. Will our house blow away? But we don’t live in Kansas! What’s going to happen? What about the electricity? Will we have to sleep down here? Will Daddy be able to get home? What are we going to do? It has been a season of changing landscapes. Things that were once as familiar as the freckles and veins on the back of my hand seem foreign to me now. It continues to change. As long as we’ve lived in this little h...

Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. October 10, 2012. Campbell c. hoffman. I said yes that first time on top of a hill in a foreign world, looking out into the starry July night. I was a giddy school girl, smiling coyly I took this crush into my sweaty palms. I said yes, of course, with strings attached. Yes, but not yet (we. Serving in missions anyhow). I’ve said yes to you, digging through my closet to find the right dress, the one that skims my legs just right. Yes t...Countle...

Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. Lessons from a hawk. May 12, 2015. May 12, 2015. Campbell c. hoffman. It’s lovely, because for the first time in seven years the demands on my physical presence are so much less. I don’t have to have eyes on everyone all the time. They can all handle the stairs on their own, the bathroom (mostly) on their own, can build forts on their own. For the first time in a long time, I have some breathing room. This is lovely. In the gift of this freedom.

He lifts his gaze from his newspaper. He is surprised at the sound of her voice. She’s a little surprised by it, too. The birds, whose song had been the only sound filling that empty street, stop as if to give my mother the stage. 8220;Near ‘nough,” he quips. Because mostly, in life, we don’t ever get exactly where we thought we we...

Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. Places of Growing: The Ocean of Independence. June 3, 2013. June 3, 2013. Campbell c. hoffman. So it was with this beach trip. It was May 1994, and at the end of our 8th grade year, we were spinning our way out of middle school and almost into high school with such drama (Is there any other way? I learn to recognize my edges, find my voice, quiet at first. Later, tiptoeing up the steps back home, she asks me to check her breath, wondering a...

Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. My very own once upon a time. January 14, 2013. Campbell c. hoffman. For the past two years I’ve picked a word for the year. I’ve used this word like a rudder, to steer myself, or like a map, to help me determine my course. I’ve used it like a mantra to help me stay focused and like a lens through which I see the minutiae of my life. I’ve learned the consistent pace of my own self when I chose breathe. This year my One Word. 8220;Sometimes that...

This is a view of Mark’s current work project. Here’s the thing: just like I overlook the sawdust-creating process of constructing a building, I know that I fail to notice the gritty work of creating that which is far less tangible. How many times do you walk down the corridors of your office and contemplate the steel that holds you up? Enter your com...

Growing a family o' weeds. Writing} other places and spaces. January 9, 2015. January 9, 2015. Campbell c. hoffman. I was late getting out of bed today. It was dark, still. A bitter cold had settled on our old house over night. I was wrapped in thick swaths of comfort and warmth, and though I knew the day beckoned, it was easier still to resist. I wasn’t late at all. This year feels different to me, though. 2014 was a life-shifting, perspective-gaining year, and I don’t want to lose that. I...Sometimes, ...
