Shake Up The Heavens: August 2014
http://shakeuptheheavens.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 23, 2014. Art, authenticity and the need for travel. The picture below is Rogier van der Weyden's painting of St. George and the dragon. It is in The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and it is one of the smallest paintings there. I had time at Reims to wander around and look. and on a transept portal I spotted these. What is going on here? Exploring and examining only by books and via the Internet, I would be dependent on the photographer's eye and the scholar's words, just as ...

Sunday, July 12, 2015. The Sacrecrow That Works. But, at PetsMart I saw this, a plushy furry owl in The Martha Stewart Gentle Play collection in the dog toy aisle. I put two in the trees out front. and the cardinals stopped. Stopped. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Who is Dave Cook? I have been teaching Art for more than 30 years, in the U.S. and overseas. Shake Up The Heavens: March 2013
http://shakeuptheheavens.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 24, 2013. Conquering kings often entered cities on donkeys or colts, it was a triumphal tradition dating at least six hundred years before Jesus entered Jerusalem. He entered humbly riding on a donkey? No Mary was humbly riding on a donkey before Jesus was born, instead of being carried in a wheeled cart, but Jesus entered Jerusalem with all the vestiges of a king entering a royal city, riding on a donkey or colt, things spread beneath his feet, lauded by the crowd on parade. The church is ...

Saturday, January 5, 2013. Gallows Humor and The Anglophile. You know, we're fans of The Addams Family in this family," I told her. "We don't own any instruments of torture, but we seem to approve of it.". I have always been a smart-ass. I don't mean to be snide and crass, it just seems to come naturally, a penchant for dark humor. I am convinced that it is genetic. There seems to be an Anglo bent toward making up satirical wit and little rhymes and jokes at otherwise serious things. London Bridge is fal...

Friday, November 23, 2012. Fall Fishing: The Mighty Sunfish. A little video treat, an otter swimming in the last of the Fall colors while I was fishing. I have caught 897 fish since August 1st, a rate of about 200 fish per month, some bass but mostly sunfish, all on wet flies in one lake in North Georgia, fishing from the bank into shallow water - shoals. The biggest ones and the hardest fighting have been yellow. Approaching fronts seem to turn them on before and afterward. Sunsets have been best. I hav...

Shake Up The Heavens: January 2014

Sunday, January 26, 2014. Goodness: ethos and pathos and art. Two topics that have affected artists since the Greeks have been ethos and pathos.
