Archive for July, 2008. The students left ten days ago. Out the window of the dining car on the Iç Anadolu Mavi Tren, I can see the same Taurus mountains in which we spent time together. I’m returning to Istanbul from Syria. Since the students left, I’ve been thinking again and again about the summer course, about the students, about the whole project of active learning. I was often confused during the seven week seminar. What is active teaching? Isn’t all teaching active? Sometimes I thought I actually ...

Walking the King’s Road. July 3, 2008 at 6:32 am. Pamukkale to Eǧirdir was on a public bus, larger and more comfortable that what we had taken so far. It was much more conducive to sleep. I think these students need bus rides to sleep they seem to be awake all the rest of the time. We were delighted to have the park to ourselves, but spent some time on the rocks talking as we dried off. What does it mean that no one was at the national park? To whom does the Tourism Ministry direct itself? Yekta Goes to ...

Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu | Page 2

Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu. We drove along fairly empty streets to the hotel, where a man carried our suitcases down the street and into a wonderful hotel room, showed us how to use the mosquito netting and left us to sleep. When William awoke this morning with a fever and a terrible cough, we decided we wouldn’t stray too far today. In our dining room in NC, one probably 8 feet tall, the other a climber whose size seems to astonish newcomers. Here they are gigantic! December 30, 2007 at 8:41 am.

Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu. January 11, 2008 at 6:44 pm. Abdulaye, the terrific driver who had taken us to Severe, just happened to be in Mopti, returning in an empty car to Bamako, so we rode along. Four hours back to Segou, through the same remarkable countryside. We stopped there for lunch, wending our way through the weekly bazaar to a riverside restaurant. The sounds and smells were quite remarkable, but all I can do here is the photos. Airport scene was pretty wild, an overbooked Air France f...

Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu. December 31, 2007 at 10:40 am. Bamako is different than anywhere I have been. The smells, the sounds, the clothing all seem quite unfamiliar. Only the old man kneeling on his prayer rug on the main road offered a sense of familiarity. Entry filed under: Mali. On the Road to Segou. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. July | 2007 | Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu
https://sshields.wordpress.com/2007/07
Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu. Archive for July, 2007. We spent less than 24 hours in Lebanon. For years, I’ve tried to make sense of the broad outlines of politics and conflict in Lebanon for my survey courses. The main thing I understand better now is why affluent Lebanese leave Beirut for the summer. Although the thermometer registered only 93, the city was completely oppressive, a combination of 87% humidity and terrible air pollution. Clearly more upscale than Southpoint (in Durham), it seemed to...
