Sara Seager is a Professor of Planetary Science and Physics at the Massachusetts. Institute of Technology. She holds the Class of 1941 Professorship Chair. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a MacArthur Fellow. Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars other than the sun. Astronomers have confirmed over 1000 exoplanets. Professor Seager's Exoplanet Space Mission Research. Professor Seager's research group works with data from several space telescopes including Kepler, Spitzer, Hubble, and EPOXI. Above the blurring effects of Earth's atmosphere, space telescopes provide excellent observations of exoplanets and their host stars. A graduate-level introduction to the physics of atmospheric radiation and remote sensing including use of computer codes. Subjects covered include: radiative transfer equation including emission and scattering, spectroscopy, Mie theory, and numerical solutions. We examine the solution of inverse problems in remote sensing of atmospheric temperature and composition.
