Simply Kurt: May 2008

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. Our student ministry team has been expanding (new regional campuses, a few newer hires, etc.) but it feels like we are starting to gel as a group. I'm a believer that "fit" is more crucial than "skill" on a team and I feel like our team fits together well and is well skilled at what they do. It was week two of our "Heroes" series and our subject was the "Sinful Woman" (the woman who poured her perfume on Jesus' feet). Jason Petty, one of our high school pastors taught and...

Our second weekend in our new building was MUCH smoother than our first. We managed to iron out lots and lots of wrinkles, which felt really good. Couldn't resist the temptation to see Wanted with the guys the other night. I should have. Too dark for my taste. The car I want to replace my Expedition with is a Scion XB. Anybody have one or have any informed opinions? Looking forward to a super lazy day off. Absolutely nothing planned. Popular Podcast Topic: What To Do When You're New. A couple of months a...

If you work with middle school kids and don't read Mark Ostreicher's blog. You really need to. His post. Yesterday was a great reminder of why I respect him so much and enjoy reading whatever he writes. Dude, (he'll start with that word to make you think he isn't all that smart), what do you think about the emerging, post-emergent, incarnational, communal, ecclesiastical, eschatological and formational implications of the current state of young teen ministry? My question to you is this: Who do you have i...

Wanna Write A Story? I've already asked a few of my friends for their contributions, but wanted to toss an invite to. Standard Publishing is updating/revising/re-distributing Controlled Chaos, a junior high ministry book I wrote about 8 years ago, and one thing we wanted to add was a 'Stories From The Trenches' feature. The hope is to get about 8-10 junior high pastors to write a 400-500 word true-life junior high ministry story. It can be funny, serious or? My Scar is and I deal with it by .". The amoun...

Week One of our Series 'Strange But True' (Elijah and the prophets of Baal). It was a strange weekend for us. Lots of creativity went into the program, but I'd say the audience response wasn't what we thought it would be. The crowd just seemed a little dead overall. The band was an all student band which meant the quality dropped off a little bit, but it was great to see a band of 100% students! All in all, it was a well planned, well executed and creative weekend that missed the mark a bit. You know it'...

Who Cares, Really. Just typing that little title to this post was tough. The reason: I feel like I care a little. Much about the election Tuesday, who becomes our next president, the future of our country etc. I've been so caught up in this election and the various levels of implications that I have allowed myself to forget a few things such as. God's kingdom is really the kingdom of my citizenship. New Podcast Finally Up. We shot this podcast. I believe early bird registration ends on Friday! Group's Na...

Enjoyed a fantastic Thanksgiving yesterday with both sides of the family. Sure missed having my dad there. Shows that I watched PART of during the course of the day: Lions/Titans game, Cowboys/Seahawks game, James Bond, Godfather parts 1&2, Texas/Texas A&M game, Kung Fu Panda, Dirty jobs, and others that I'm forgetting. Things That Bother Me. The truth is, I'm a pretty laid-back guy and really don't get too worked up over much. But there are a few things recently that have bothered me a little bit. For instance:. SHAVING: the whole process is such a bother which is why I choose to only shave once a week or for an important meeting. Electric razors don't work well and traditional blades are a hassle. FEET: Mine are gross, and I imagine most people feel the same way about theirs. The fact that I have to try to " un. I sho...
