August 31, 2010. A meal worth sharing. Today I attended orientation for the French Culinary Institute where I'll start school this Thursday. I felt like a giddy freshman again, eager to meet my classmates and learn what the months to come would entail. We hopped the subway and before I knew it we were in Greenpoint standing in front of. Do you not like the tartar? Oh no, of course not! Thomas falsely assured her, giving me a wink as she hurried to another table. August 29, 2010. This evening I had the pl...

Tso, What's Cooking? April 25, 2012. Strawberry Field of Dreams with Sabayon. Strawberry season is in flux and as I trial variations of strawberry hand pies with pre-made puff pastry to attempting pastry dough from scratch, here's a simple strawberry recipe to satisfy a late night dessert craving until I find a presentable hand pie recipe to share. Strawberries (as much as you want/don't want). 1/8 cup of sugar. Juice from 1/2 of lemon. 1/2 cup heavy cream. 3 Gently fold the two together. Add in the ...

Tso, What's Cooking? February 27, 2012. Forget the Texas 'Winter,' I'm Making Braised Beef Short Ribs (Take 2). It's February and a humid 70 degrees outside. I think the lowest temp this winter (or whatever Texas winter we get) has been high 30's for oh, a few days? When I think (and feel) winter, I crave hearty soups, roasted and braised meats, chili, bread pudding. These past few months, I think I have made one each of the above when I normally make them several times. 3 beef short ribs. 3 With a hot d...

Tso, What's Cooking? August 23, 2011. Creamy Chicken Pesto Pasta. When you have that one tomato left in the fridge or some rotisserie chicken leftovers, this is the easiest dish to make - granted, not the healthiest but easy and satisfying. Pesto is a staple in my fridge and with my abundance of basil in my garden, I like to make pesto. Creamy Pesto Pasta with Chicken and Tomatoes. 1/2 cup heavy cream. 4 large spoonfuls of pesto (approximately 4-5 tbspn but really to your taste). 3 Take 4 large spoonfuls...

Mint: I hate to see you go! September 30, 2011 at 7:05 pm. We started growing mint in our backyard years before the mojito craze began. Each year, it doubles in size and I am usually left saying to myself, “what do I do with all of this mint? As it turns out, pick chick just love mojitos! And nothing is better than making them at home. Luckily I came across a great little recipe from Marissa at. So last night I came across her recipe for Mint Simple Syrup. And I had an “ah ha” moment! 2 oz of White Rum.

Alive in rural IN: October 2009
http://ruralin.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 5, 2009. Here in Indiana it's harvest time or just after for some. I'm still pulling out peppers by the bushel and no one seems to want them-a couple of weeks ago I was selling heirloom tomatoes at market and in Wabash you almost can't give them away. Pity, pity. Whole foods in Indy was PAYING more than I charged at market. Guess I'll target them next year! I think pumpkins are sooooo beautiful! Perhaps that soybean field would look really good in shades of orange, pinks, grays, and blue!
