The Hot Sauce

Wednesday, May 30, 2007. I really liked Charlie's pick for this week with the article "Elite Colleges Open New Door to Low-Income Youths" by Sara Rimer in. The New York Times. I think that this piece is a great example of something short, sweet, and interesting. The piece then flashes back quickly, which does a good job of providing personal background information. The flashback is inserted at just the right moment to allow the reader to continue building Jack's character. Wednesday, May 23, 2007. In abo...

The Hot Sauce: Mass Extinction: Response

http://sauceishot.blogspot.com/2007/05/mass-extinction-response.html

Tuesday, May 15, 2007. The first thing I noticed about the article in Mother Jones. All the new fence will really arrest is the flow of nature's immigrants.". This is definitely a big, messy story, attacking the problem from a variety of angles and providing all the information necessary. I, too, admire this piece's complexity. Good find, Lauren! The Mass Extinction article was an excellent attempt at spreading awareness. Nevertheless, the format and points seemed unplanned. Too many issues were addresse...

The Hot Sauce: Ria Cortesio: Response

http://sauceishot.blogspot.com/2007/05/ria-cortesio-response.html

Monday, May 7, 2007. First, I thought the lede was a fairly interesting anecdote, but it definitely could have had some more "umphf" to it. What it did do, though, was give a good introduction to character and theme. I always appreciate stories getting to the meat more quickly. Nonetheless, as I said in the first paragraph, the subject matter is interesting to me, and I was again glad to see the writer get to the point so quickly. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Hot Sauce: Feature: First Draft

http://sauceishot.blogspot.com/2007/05/feature-first-draft.html

Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Get Up, Get Out, Get Active. In about 30 minutes per day, it is possible to reduce the risk of a heart attack, diabetes or stroke, reduce the prevalence of anxiety and depression and reduce the occurrence of illnesses. In that same thirty minutes, a contribution can be made toward building healthy bones, muscles, and joints. These 30 minutes can also provide therapeutic benefits for people suffering from physical limitations or chronic disorders. Thirty minutes. This trend is not...

Zoo Journal: Untitled Final Feature

http://kcarsok.blogspot.com/2007/05/untitled-final-feature.html

Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Endless rows of corn stretch as far as the eye can see out the window of Amtrak’s 351 Pere Marquette train riding from Detroit to Chicago. The bland, dusty yellow nothingness goes on for hundreds of miles, punctuated by signs warning of deadly pesticide applications. Worse yet is the industrialized meat market. Epidemics spread quickly among animals when they are confined to the inhumanely crowded living quarters that are customary to US livestock and poultry production. ...In Ka...

Lauren's Journalism Jottings: April 2007

http://journalistlauren.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

A forum for furthering my growth as a journalist. Wednesday, April 25, 2007. This profile hits it. We see a public figure in private- tooling around his home, ferociously reading paperbacks, struggling with his genius. I appreciate the reportage because Gorney clearly spent lots of time with Geisel or at least asked the right questions. I found myself asking 'how did she find that out? And yet also being surprised that I would ask that, because the piece flowed so seamlessly. Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Tuesday, May 1, 2007. Eating Well and Keeping it Local. Caitlin's Journalism Blogs: Sorry everyone... can I try again?

http://ziggimawara.blogspot.com/2007/05/sorry-everyone-can-i-try-again.html

Tuesday, May 8, 2007. Sorry everyone. can I try again? So, after reading some comments, I realize I completely missed the ball this the last article- it wasn’t a feature. I was looking for “messy” and just got crap. It was scattered and needed more focus. I apologize to everyone who did read it. I’m posting a new article. I’m sorry to make people read twice. This one isn’t so messy, but is a feature on a new band called Panic! Again, sorry for the last piece! But in case you still want to take a look:.

Sunday, May 20, 2007. I forgot to post my final draft! Dr Rev. Mary Ellen Ashcroft, the Chaplain here at Kalamazoo College and a professor of English, walks up to the trunk of the tall tree and places both of her hands firmly on its smooth and rippling grey trunk. She looks up, “Beautiful tree isn’t it? Her two dogs bound around her as she wanders through the nature reserve. Mary Ellen has lots of passions in her life. She began seminary, moved to. Charlie's Class Blog: Profile Reaction

http://chmack34.blogspot.com/2007/05/profile-reaction.html

Wednesday, May 2, 2007. I didn't really like how my profile turned out. I am definitly not a good enough writer to get across the character using the show don't tell. I felt I wasn't able to adequately build the character of my subject without coming right out and saying. I attempted to use as many descriptions and situations to illustrate the points I was trying to make, but they never seemed to pan out exactly how I wanted. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
