Jeddah Economic Co, the company responsible for developing the 1km-high Kingdom Tower project has signed a $587m (SR: 2.2bn) deal with Saudi Arabia’s National Water Company, according to Saudi Press Agency. The tower has been designed by US-based Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture and will cost around $1.22bn to build. Construction work is due to start later this year.

Work to build the world’s first 1km-high building, the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia, is set to begin on 27 April. The $1.2bn (RM4bn) project has been plagued by setbacks since it was first proposed in 2011, but above-ground work on the Jeddah super skyscraper will commence next month. The complex will contain 59 elevators, including five double-deck elevators.
