The campaign to save the Brighton Speed trials was won on 23 January 2014 following a unanimous ‘yes’ vote by the Economic Development and Culture Committee at Brighton and Hove Council. This complete turnaround following the Council’s initial refusal was thanks to the overwhelming support we received from Brighton and Hove Motor Club members, motorsport fans, Brighton residents as well as the media. The Brighton and Hove Motor Club organises the Brighton Speed Trials. Since the early 1920's we were known as the Brighton and Hove Motor Cycle and Light Car Club. The Motor Cycle interests were split off in 1932 and the Brighton and Hove Motor Club came into being. We moved into the arches under Dukes Mound on the seafront at Brighton in 1948 where we have remained ever since. These premises were given a major refurbishment and bar in 1957, again in 2001, and most recently in 2011.

As the governing body of four wheel motor sport for the United Kingdom, the Motor Sports Association remains absolutely committed to the oldest motor sport event in the UK (and possibly the world) that is known as the Brighton Speed Trials. On behalf of the MSA, I would urge the council not to throw away history, but instead to look for inspiration to their forefathers on the Town Council who were among the pioneering innovators more than 100 years ago in the creation of the first National Speed Trials.
