HISTORY OF OGUNQUIT BEACH. The area of Ogunquit and Wells was part of a land grant in the early 1600s’ given to Sir Ferdinando Gorges by the King of England. It became part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1653 before being ceded to Maine in 1820.
