The Mare Island Historic Park Foundation Save Our Sail group has taken on the task of raising money in order to fund the construction of a permanent and fitting site for the sail of this historic submarine built with pride on Mare Island. The location of the SSBN 658 Memorial Site. Will be on Mare Island at the front South Entrance to the Mare Island Museum - within two hundred yards of the original construction site of this historical piece of Naval history.

January 1, 2015. The SOS committee is currently raising money for the Mariano G. Vallejo SSBN 658 Sail Memorial to be located on Mare Island just outside the Mare Island Museum on Railroad Ave. The perimeter of the memorial base will be encircled with 8 x 8 inch personally inscribed tiles of individual donors making them highly visible to anyone visiting the site. Fundraising efforts for Phase Two of the Sail Memorial began on January 1, 2015. November 1, 2014. July 1-4, 2011. The 5th All Hands Reunion.

A Tale of Determination: The Last Components of the 658 Come Home. With the demise of the Soviet Union bringing an end to the Cold War, the Navy's mission regarding the role of the fleet ballistic missile submarines changed and many 'boomers' built in the 1960s were decommissioned and dismantled. In 1995, after its final voyage that included a stop at Mare Island, the USS Mariano G Vallejo SSBN 658 succumbed to the cutting torches at Bremerton, Washington.
