Journal of my Antarctic experience working to support the United States Antarctic Program. However, I was looking forward to seeing my old college chum Wade who came back to McMurdo during Winfly as an electrician. I also stopped in to visit with the McMurdo IT personnel and my possible future boss if I come back. Well we're slated to leave here around 7 PM, which will make it a late night getting into Christchurch. I'm excited yet a little sad to be leaving. Posted by Erik @ 2:57 PM. Since the temperatu...

Journal of my Antarctic experience working to support the United States Antarctic Program. Station Opening was set for last Saturday October 21. Unfortunately (or fortunately for some here who don't want new arrivals) the weather has been too cold for the LC-130s to land. It needs to be -50 C or warmer before the LC-130s will land, and it's been hanging just below -55 C. The meteorologists are probably the most sought after personnel on station - "Hey Don, how's the weather looking? And then there were 62.

Journal of my Antarctic experience working to support the United States Antarctic Program. A Normal Day at the South Pole. I wasn't lost, but just need to get my bearings. I thought about the guy who was lost the other day off the Antarctic research vessel Laurence M. Gould. I had a radio, and I had shelter around me. Not a problem. 25 minutes later I was back in the station. Not bad for 3/4 mile trek. Posted by Erik @ 5:43 PM. Who was able to fit into a white liesure suit. What a pimp! Three of us ran o...

Journal of my Antarctic experience working to support the United States Antarctic Program. Surise - Spring Equinox. According to Wikipedia the Equinox. Occurs when the sun is directly over the equator. In our case, it signifies 'Sunrise'. A few days ago it peaked above the horizon, and it looked like it was perculating there. In any case it was cause for celebration. Two whole pigs were roasted, the galley was decorated, and I brought out my tropical shirt again. Posted by Erik @ 12:45 PM. The first plan...

Journal of my Antarctic experience working to support the United States Antarctic Program. What I do down here. After reading my Blog, a friend of mine wondered if we get any work done. It seemed we were reliving our college days. Well what's wrong with that. Work is just that, it's 'work'. Just because I'm doing it at the South Pole makes it unique although sometimes there are some unexpected situations. As the Network Engineer. Here's an excerpt of my job responsibilities:. Journal of my Antarctic experience working to support the United States Antarctic Program. It's a tradition since the beginning of Antarctic exploration that a Mid-Winter celebration is held. Since June 21, is in the middle of the week, we celebrated on Friday and got another two-day weekend! As most people did, as soon as work was over, I used my precious shower allotment and dressed in semi-formal attire. The Galley crew went all out serving us a five-star meal, see the menu below. With Basil vinaigret...
