Fort Tanjong Katong: Its History. For more detailed information). The construction of the battery started in 1879, and consisted of three 7-inch muzzle-loading guns and with the typical magazines and bombproof shelters built between gun emplacements. In 1885, the three guns were replaced with more powerful, longer-range breech loading 8-inch guns. Further upgraded with additional fortifications, the Battery was acquired the status of a Fort.
