Hooded Plovers (aka Hoodies) are listed as vulnerable under the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act 1999 and have one of the lowest survival rates of any species in the world. Without human assistance, Hoodies have only have a 2.5% chance of survival from egg to fully fledged adult. Hoodie chicks have one of the lowest survival rates of any species at 1 in every 100 chicks.

Hooded Plovers (aka Hoodies) react to off leash dogs on the beach by fleeing or showing signs of distress at twice the distance they do to humans. Research shows that flightless chicks stay hidden for three times as long after off leash dogs have passed compared to walkers with no dogs. Nests, eggs and/or chicks being trampled or eaten. Stay close to the water’s edge.

This special group of birds depend on coastal habitats for survival. They lay their eggs directly on the ground on beaches, estuaries and rocky coastal areas. Their fascinating cryptic behaviours are clever adaptations to the predators they face, but given the love people have for beaches, there are now many new threats added to the mix.
