My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Tuesday, August 23, 2005. Journal Entry 1: The First Week. I've been with the Peace Corps a week, today, so now would be a good time to post a note let you know what's going on. We drove 3 hours north to JFK, waited in the airport another 3 hours and, with a brief stop in Dakar - the capital of Senegal - to refuel, 17 hours to SA. Once in Johannesburg we boarded a bus for over 3 hours to come to Moktapani. All in all, the transit time was well over a day. Tonight the...

My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Thursday, September 29, 2005. Journal Entry 5: Andrew's Post 1. Andrew was the first volunteer I really got to know. We roomed together in Philadelphia for two days before heading to Africa. Then we stayed across the hall from each other while in Moktapani and lived a few houses apart in Moletsi. Maybe the god's conspired to bring us together? Peace Corps, another PCT perspective:. Posted by Lil' Mashudu at 7:13 AM. Friday, September 23, 2005. Miss Nichole. Littl...

What the blog!?: June 2005

My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Sunday, June 19, 2005. Pre-Departure: Boston Marathon [April 18, 2005]. Oh yes I do! Unning the 2005 Boston Marathon. She said. ".Okay," I replied - like we were going to Mocon to get a tuna sandwich. I was such a neophyte I actually called the Boston Athletic Association and told them I hadn't paid to register nor did I qualify but, and this is a direct quote, "Would it be okay if I just come up there and run it anyways? Moreover, I was a soccer. I'm slow to admit i...

My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Wednesday, February 22, 2006. Journal Entry 16: School Development Plan. Despite my best efforts to describe it, what I do is probably still elusive to many of my friends and family. What can I say? The categorization Educational Consultant is bound to inspire polite nods but not much clarity. When talking to one of my principals about my ideas, it became apparent I needed to put them down in writing. So here then is my School Development Plan (SDP). You may ...At th...

My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Saturday, November 19, 2005. Journal Entry 10: One Month in Venda. I had my first solicitation today. A young girl from the village stopped and asked me where I'm from. Oh, America! She responded. I love you. You're beautiful. How do you feel about me? Hmph Apparently they're not big on foreplay in South Africa. Which isn't to say I haven't had my challenges. As testament by this journal entry from a few days back:. By writing the word 'Circumference'. Hey, did I.

My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Monday, December 26, 2005. Journal Entry 12: The Sign of Christmas. This may be a difficult entry for some people to read because it deals with death. However it was really cathartic for me to write. So, with that disclaimer. As they were coming home, the pickup truck or bakkie (the adopted Afrikaans word) they were traveling in was hit head on by a bus. The driver was pinned against the steering column and killed. All of the boys were sitting in the bed of the bakki...

My Peace Corps, South Africa web log. Thursday, January 19, 2006. Journal Entry 14: Sister PreSchool? Recently, my Mom sent me a box filled with pens, paper clips, some coloring books, crayons, five very cool hand puppets and some other goodies. While she knows my maturation-process doesn’t seem to be in a particular rush, I begrudgingly concluded that the materials were not for me. Hmph! The teachers, with their new goodies! Ndo livhuwa, ga maande! Which is roughly I thank you, enormously! Pretty humble...
