Speech and Language Milestones. Uses sentence-like intonations (jargon). Accurately imitates some words. Follows simple one-step commands. Points to recognized objects and wanted objects. Uses three to 20 words. 50% of all utterances are nouns. Begins to comment, answer simple wh-questions and acknowledges speech of others. 1 - 2 years. Words increasing in frequency; jargon almost gone. Improvement in intelligibility-now 65% intelligible. Comprehends approximately 300 words. Responds to yes/no questions.

Helpful Tips for Parents (Dyfluencies). 1 Don’t require your child to speak precisely or correctly at all times. Allow talking to be fun and enjoyable. 2 Use family meals as a conversation time. Avoid distractions such as radio or TV. 3 Avoid corrections or criticisms such as slow down, take your time, or take a deep breath. These comments, however well-intentioned, will only make your child feel more self-conscious. 5 Do not interrupt your child or tell him or her to start over.
