A guide to building the framework for your Garden Decking
http://gardendecking.datacottage.com/deckframe.htm
Building the Decking Frame. I had a substantial wall at one end of my deck so I used this to support that end of the decking. The joists were laid out roughly where they needed to go to give me an idea of how it would all fit together and where the post would have to go. As you can see from the above picture most of the posts have been concreted in, There are also some short post in the near corners to take the weight off of the patio slabs. A Guide to the rules for DIY Garden Decking
http://gardendecking.datacottage.com/deckrules.htm
Basic Rules and Guidelines for Laying a Timber Deck. All wood should be pre-treated (or tanalised), an end coat wood preserver should be painted on to sawn ends to maintain moisture blocking integrity. Fix noggins (short lengths of joist timber) at 1200 centres to strengthen the frame, this will prevent flexing of the joists. Board should be spaced with a gap of between 5mm and 8mm and a gap of between 3mm and 5mm where boards meet newel posts or at joints between two boards laid end to end. Noggins shou...

http://gardendecking.datacottage.com/deckingplans.htm
Here is a step by step break down of the building of my decking, hopefully this will answer any questions you had when you decided to look on the Internet for more information. Get accurate measurements and draw up a plan of the deck you want to build. Don't worry too much about fine details at this point, things can be altered as you go along. Layout the joists and find the best locations for the supporting posts. In my case I had a substantial wall at one end so I fixed a 4 x 4 length of post timbe...

How to lay decking boards - A Guide to DIY Garden Decking
http://gardendecking.datacottage.com/layingdeckboards.htm
Laying the Decking Boards. As mentioned earlier, I decided to lay my boards at 45 degrees so the first board to screw down was logically the one which followed the 45 degree edge. This board was fixed into place using decking screws and then the other boards laid parallel to this in either direction. Use two screws to fix the boards where they cross each joist, these should be about an inch in from either side (25mm). So in my case the longest planks needed 10 or 12 screws, the shortest 4 or 6.

Before I embarked on the building of a deck and the lower patio I had previously had the bottom half of the garden lowered, levelled off and turfed. Apart from the upper patio and steps, the rest of the garden was sloped and unusable. Site designed and maintained by Ian Patrick.
