Week of 02/05 | Stacy's blog, for real
https://sbranham.wordpress.com/participation-journal/february/week-of-0205
Stacy’s blog, for real. Just another WordPress.com weblog. I think I was well-prepared for class this week. I read all of the readings in time for the Tuesday and Thursday classes. As usual, I took electronic notes on each of the papers. I was also assigned the role of class lead this week, and I came prepared to lead class discussion, but that ended up being pushed to next week. I wish I had taken better notes on the comments made during class discussion, so that’s something to work on for next week.
Participation Journal | Stacy's blog, for real
https://sbranham.wordpress.com/participation-journal
Stacy’s blog, for real. Just another WordPress.com weblog. This page is dedicated to thoughts and concerns regarding my class participation. This “participation journal” is contributes to 5% of my overall grade in the course. I will make a weekly entry into this journal, commenting on my class participation:. Was I prepared for class that is, did I read and analyze the assigned readings? Did I review the class lead posting prior to class? Did I participate in class in large and/or small group discussions?

“The Lynchburg Story” | Stacy's blog, for real
https://sbranham.wordpress.com/film-diary/february/the-lynchburg-story
Stacy’s blog, for real. Just another WordPress.com weblog. 8220;The Lynchburg Story”. The Lynchburg Story is a documentary that reveals the history of the Lynchburg Colony for the Epileptic and Feebleminded, a sterilization clinic that facilitated the involuntary sterilization of 8,300 children and young teenagers between the years of 1927 and 1972. The Lynchburg Colony was just one of many facilities that became established across the nation during the early 1900’s. My interest was also piqued by the ir...

“Children in America’s Schools” | Torie's Blog: STS 2154
https://torieg.wordpress.com/2007/01/29/“children-in-america’s-schools”
Torie’s Blog: STS 2154. Children in America’s Schools. January 29, 2007 at 7:57 pm. I think watching this movie during the first week of classes set the climate for what the class was going to reflect on. For college students I thought the film was easier to relate to from the students perspective; rather than the school board, teachers, parents, etc. I personally grew up in a predominately white community, with a fairly wealthy school district. It would be interesting to consider what would happen if yo...

Torie’s Blog: STS 2154. Class Discussion 3/20/07: Prenatal Testing and Disability. March 20, 2007 at 4:52 pm. I thought the discussions this week about prenatal testing were really interesting. The impression I got for the most part is that if you’re pro-life than you are against prenatal testing, unless you just want to be prepared. The case study we did Thursday was intriguing because it made you look at it from different perspectives. I myself am pro-choice. I think we all have in our heads too, (as g...

Genetic Testing Discussion | VT bizz
https://bnels11.wordpress.com/2007/03/24/genetic-testing-discussion
Just another WordPress.com weblog. Laquo; Week of March 22. Week of March 29. In the second part of class we had a broad discussion of the ethics of genetic testing. We also examined the scenarios holistically. Here are a couple of points I wanted to speak about…. 2 How far is too far? What is an acceptable human? Does “genetic defect” mean “waste of life”? I’m out of thoughts now. feel free to reply. This entry was posted on March 24, 2007 at 7:35 pm and is filed under Discussion. From your own site.
Thoughts from the week | VT bizz
https://bnels11.wordpress.com/2007/03/30/thoughts-from-the-week
Just another WordPress.com weblog. Laquo; Week of March 29. Week of April 5th. Thoughts from the week. This week was all about the right vs. wrongs of human genetics. More specifically the genetics of pregnancy, birth, and life. We discussed the ethics of the fertility industry in the United States. On tuesday we had a class lead that covered sex selection and the topics of Prenatal Diagnosis, Sperm Sorting, and Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis. Or do you want to pull the plug? If I was a parent I thin...

https://torieg.wordpress.com/2007/02/27/class-discussion22707-a-tale-of-two-diseases
Torie’s Blog: STS 2154. Class Discussion2/27/07: A Tale of Two Diseases. February 27, 2007 at 11:46 pm. Rothman explains the way mainstream America understands eugenics using a quote from a CBS special that aired in 1967:. Rothman uses another quote that describes human compassion for one another and for life as getting in the way and blurring our vision of the gene pool. She goes on to raise questions about what we might do if we abandoned our ‘so-called’ compassion. Would we kill of genetic weaklings?
Miss Evers’ Boys | Torie's Blog: STS 2154
https://torieg.wordpress.com/2007/02/01/miss-evers’-boys
Torie’s Blog: STS 2154. February 1, 2007 at 5:12 am. I thought this film was sort of biased. It makes the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment sound like an unheard of unethical devious medical study of African American men. The same study had been done on whites in Germany only a few years earlier. I think there was a lack of trust in the black men being studied. The doctors, black and white, didn’t think these men were capable of understanding what disease they had, and the required funding needed to treat it.

In The White Man’s Image | Torie's Blog: STS 2154

Torie’s Blog: STS 2154. In The White Man’s Image. January 30, 2007 at 5:11 am. I thought this movie was really interesting in the characters it portrayed and the idea of what it meant to be white. It portrayed the officer that took the Native Americans under his command as sympathetic and kind. While he might have been saving the Native Americans biological lives, he was killing their spiritual lives. He was stripping them of their physical, cultural, and spiritual identities. Although, their culture has...
