After developing the Scale2x algorithm in the 2001 for the AdvanceMAME. Project, some years later, I found in the Wikipedia article Pixel art scaling algorithms. That an already developed algorithm called EPX was producing the exact same result of Scale2x! Really a surprise, as in fact, they are producing the same graphic effect despite the Scale2x algorithm definition is considerably different and faster! Describing the EPX algorithm developed by Eric Johnston in the 1992 when working for LucasArts.

The effect works repeating a computation pattern for every pixel of the original image. The pattern starts from a square of 9 pixels and expands the central pixel computing 4 new pixels. These are some snapshot examples that explain the basic effects available with AdvanceMAME when the image is stretched. This effect simply duplicates and removes rows and lines when the image is stretched. This effect tries to save the image details checking the luminosity of the pixels in stretching. This effect tries to save the image details displaying the mean color of the pixels in stretching. This effect applies a generic blur filter computing the mean color in the horizontal and vertical directions.
