Fix "Try another search" button to always work and preserve values from last search. Added min7b9b13 and min7b5b9b13. Added more sus4 chords. Fixed a long-standing bug with mouse focus in some browsers (e.g. Firefox). Added support for multiple clefs. Improved positioning of the chord on the staff. Ensure that bass note always goes at the bottom of the chord, and is removed from elsewhere in the chord if present. Some minor layout improvements. Result image is now clickable, for easy zooming.

Here are some things which still need to be fixed or added to this web app:. Fix input fields in narrow view. In multi-line mode, add text at the end of each line. Describing the scale class. Ensure custom notes are in ascending order (unless exceeding a given range). Ensure bass notes are always under custom chords, then check via this. Fix "Try another search" button when reached link directly from external referrer. Release libraries as a gem. Into an expanding accordion. 4 as ♮. 3 in some contexts?

About the Scale Matcher. This Scale Matcher was born out of jazz harmony conversations between Adam Spiers. Barak had been calculating the fewest notes are required to uniquely identify a particular mode of a scale as applied to a particular chord, and Adam remarked that it should be fairly easy to teach a computer to do that. An hour or two later, he had a prototype working which despite being extremely limited and rough around the edges, was producing some interesting results.

What can I use this for? For experienced improvisers, this may help you find modes and scales outside your normal "comfort zone", which could add new and interesting flavours to your solos. Similarly for composers. For beginners to improvisation, it may be useful in helping understanding which modes of which scales can be used over a given chord. However, there is no substitute for playing and listening to the modes! If you find this useful for whatever reason, please let me know. What is a mode in music?
