Scaling the Peak: Apple progress

http://scalingthepeak.blogspot.com/2015/07/apple-progress.html

A blog about Peak Oil and a family attempting to cope. Thursday, July 2, 2015. Our biggest apple tree just put forth its first fruits. I counted at least twenty of these baby apples:. Scale: each one is 1/2 to 1". Yes, this is the same apple tree. That suffered from too much rain. So far my brace had kept the trunk vertical. So that's one concern. Other concerns: disease; animals eating the fruit; limbs too thin to hold up the apples. We watch over this anxiously. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Scaling the Peak: A summer chill

http://scalingthepeak.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-summer-chill.html

A blog about Peak Oil and a family attempting to cope. Wednesday, July 15, 2015. It's July, and after several warm weeks we turned autumnal, here on the mountain. It's 56° F right now, halfway between dawn and noon, according to our thermometer. 53°, according to Wunderground.com. It's an obvious thing to say, but true, nonetheless: winter is always present for us. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Doug Fine: Author, Journalist, Adventurer, Goat-Herder. Scaling the Peak: Summer visitors

http://scalingthepeak.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-visitors.html

A blog about Peak Oil and a family attempting to cope. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. There aren't a lot of people in our town, and no neighbors visible from the homestead. But we do get frequent animal visitors. This week one of the deer made an appearance in daylight. This is below the house, just past our new potato patch:. She allowed me to get close enough for several photos, before bounding into the deeper woods. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Doug Fine: Author, Journalist, Adventurer, Goat-Herder.

Bees to the Rescue. Of Giant Moths, Nanking Cherries and Sea Side Plums →. March 11, 2012. Spent the day propagating plants. Back in fall, I tried my hand at ground layering, a technique that involves burying part of a plant stem to encourage the plant to root in place. Specifically, I bent a long blackcurrant. Today, I unburied the layered section, and was delighted to find roots! Line art drawing of ground layering (above) donated to the Wikimedia Foundation. And released into the public domain.
