At this point, hundreds of Scamps have been built by others, mostly from a kit that is available, some from plans. I'm doing the latter.…

Making a Box Mast – Building a Scamp

https://scamp2016.wordpress.com/making-a-box-mast

Water Ballast, Cockpit Sole and Storage. Making a Box Mast. Making a Box Mast. The Scamp plans call for making up a mast using the “birdsmouth” technique. This is a common method of making hollow masts that is well documented in many places. Even though I’ve built a number of masts and spars before, I’ve never done a birdsmouth, and I admit that I find the thought of gluing up an 8-sided part 16′ long all at once somewhat intimidating. The benefits I see to this approach are:. February 28, 2017 at 7:19 pm.

Lead Ballast – Building a Scamp

https://scamp2016.wordpress.com/lead-ballast

Water Ballast, Cockpit Sole and Storage. Making a Box Mast. First I will use a utility knife to slice off rectangular sections from the roll. These will start at 6″ wide, with each successive piece being 1/8″ narrower than the previous piece. This continues for 8 pieces, so down to a 5″ width. Then the next 8 pieces get an 1/8″ larger each time. Obviously, you could just cut two pieces of each size as you went down. 6 thoughts on “ Lead Ballast. February 5, 2016 at 10:19 pm. Epoxy Coating Plywood – Building a Scamp

https://scamp2016.wordpress.com/epoxy-coating-plywood

Water Ballast, Cockpit Sole and Storage. Making a Box Mast. The manual calls for 3 coats of epoxy on all interior and exterior surfaces, and glassing much or all of the exterior. Many Scamp builders have gone even farther than this, such as using carbon fiber or graphite coatings. I’m still debating the value of this myself. There are some very good boat builders who don’t believe in epoxy coating plywood at all. The arguments against it are:. It adds a lot to the overall cost. I’ve done it both wa...

The Jig – Building a Scamp

https://scamp2016.wordpress.com/the-jig

Water Ballast, Cockpit Sole and Storage. Making a Box Mast. The plans call for a simple jig on which the boat is built. In the kit this is provided in the form of several sheets of particle board that clip together into a frame on the floor. One of the other builders had suggested putting the jig on wheels so that it could be moved around, and I liked this idea since my workshop is not too large and the project is going to take awhile. Here’s a shot of the frame prior to installing the forms:. You’...

Plank Layouts – Building a Scamp

https://scamp2016.wordpress.com/plank-layouts

Water Ballast, Cockpit Sole and Storage. Making a Box Mast. I just laid these up in a computer graphics program, and obviously the parts on sheet 2 could be inverted to mirror the sheet #1 layout. The point was just to insure that all the pieces could be fit onto sheets of this size. By having the shop cut and scarf the full sheets this way I can save myself a lot of scarfing. 5 thoughts on “ Plank Layouts. February 6, 2016 at 1:38 am. I love your solution here. Well done! Daisy II: December 2013

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Friday, 27 December 2013. This year's sailing related present was a book about the 2008 voyage around Great Britain. By Mike Brooke in a Cape Cutter 19. I first learned of this trip in January 2008 at the London Boat Show. The stand for Honnor Marine featured the newly built boat Theo's Future. Subsequently, I followed Mike's blog as he completed the trip. Inspirational! A challenging future prospect for Daisy II. So, back to Daisy II. In the mean time, we've upgr...

Daisy II: May 2014

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Friday, 30 May 2014. Ascension cruise, 27-30 May. Cruising upstream on the River Stour in light winds, Day 2. Fortunately, much of the very evident, rotten inland weather bypassed this part of the east coast! OK, so the title is a bit pretentious but I was at anchor in the Walton Backwaters, listening to an Ascension Day service broadcast on Radio 4. Just me, the boat, various seals and birds and the radio. What makes a picture? At anchor, Landermere Creek at the ...

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Friday, 25 July 2014. End of term mini-cruise: 23-24 July. Free at last.(from term time.). Such is the lot of a teacher, summer holidays lead to cruising opportunities the like of which other working-folk could possibly only dream. Reached up the Stour. One can be certain that jib and mizzen will do when speed tops out at 6.5kts in such conditions. Sunset over Holbrook School. Happy for anyone to let me know! Tall ship with copious rope! 201nm, top speed 6.5kts.

Daisy II: Sunday Seahopper action at Rutland Water

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2015/07/sunday-seahopper-action-at-rutland-water.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Sunday, 5 July 2015. Sunday Seahopper action at Rutland Water. Seahopper action or inaction: there being little wind, oars were often necessary. The news on the engine front is that there will probably be a new outboard by next weekend. Yesterday, I purchased a brand new Quicksilver petrol tank with matching fuel line and spent a good hour or so running the engine on the back of Daisy II. The slipway at the Watersports Centre, Whitwell Creek. Before that can happe...

Daisy II: June 2015

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Sunday, 28 June 2015. Still, one piece of technology has been added to the boating gadgets: a GoPro, as can be seen from the above video. It's early days, as yet, but I'm looking forward to getting to know how to use it better! The second piece of technology to feature is rather less exciting. I've started a thread on the Drascombe Forum, the first post of which goes something like this:. It then spent a week on the mooring and the next time I tried to start it, i...

Daisy II: March 2015

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Sunday, 22 March 2015. Fitting out, 2015. Things have been quiet on the blogging front but, behind the scenes, fitting out has been chugging along quite nicely. The first task was to strip back the mast to bare wood. I've also applied a coat of Sadolin to the gunwhales. I still need to do the inner facing side plus the transom. Whatever else gets done depends entirely on weather and time. The plan, as ever, is to be sailing from the beginning of April. She was bui...

Daisy II: June 2014

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Saturday, 28 June 2014. Orwell in the rain. Slow moving thunderstorms dominating the day. And, by all accounts, things could have been worse.much worse. The drive back home along the A14 was manic and, on returning home, St Ives had developed multiple mini-floods. As it happens on today's short boat trip, rain was forecast and, whilst it didn't disappoint, I certainly had the best of the day. In a light F3 southerly breeze, Daisy II. Storms then saw me off the riv...

Red track: 27th August; yellow track 28th August; 37.3nm with tide-assisted top speed 7.1kts. Cruising has taken something of a back seat recently while other matters have been attended to. In so doing, a greenhouse has been purchased on ebay, disassembled in Stevenage and reassembled at home with a new base - all for the cost of £51. New ensign pole working well! Daisy II: September 2014

http://daisyii.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Drascombe Coaster: Daisy II (home page). Saturday, 27 September 2014. Saturday began the final leg of the season, Daisy II. Returning to her mooring until late, late Autumn. Launching took place on the night tide. It was very dark with no help from the new moon, but sufficient light pollution from Harwich and Ipswich to make launching possible with a head torch! HW was at 2am and I managed to push her off the trailer at Kings Boatyard slip at around 1am, finally turning in at 1.30am. After a few experime...
