Health and Safety in the classroom. Here are some key points to consider and obey before and while operating any machine or working in the metal work room. Always wear eye protection (goggles/visor). Always wear ear protection. Tie back any loose hair or clothing, ties etc. Bags and coats are to be neatly put away. Never distract the person working with hand tools or power tools. Never enter the exclusion zone set out for that machine. Never use a machine unless the teacher is in the room to supervise you.

A pillar drill is a free standing machine that uses a motor to rotate a drill bit. This drill bit then can be used to cut holes of different diameters in different types of material. e.g. wood, plastic or metal. The pillar drill can be small enough to fit onto a table. The lathe is a machine that is used to turn cylindrical or conical pieces. Seen below is a short video to show the lathe been used to make a small project. The Junior Certificate Metalwork Exam consists of Practical and Written elements. Both are completed in 3rd Year. 200 marks for project/100 marks for day practica. 100 for written exam. Students who choose to do Higher Level will also have a 3 hour Day Practical Exam which. Is worth 25% of their overall Grade. (This is taken from the Practical aspect above) .
