One of the great personalities that I got to know in Elmira was a former boxer by the name of Art Sykes. The biggest claim to boxing fame that Art had was that he went 8 rounds with Joe Louis when Joe was in his prime.

ELMIRA AND OTHER PLACES. Wednesday, July 27, 2005. I saw a reference to Pal's and it reminded me that it was the premier- if not only-sporting goods store in Elmira. I still have my first basemens gloves from that store. The one is so small that i cannot believe that is what I used. I would also use other bats, My favorites were the Ted Kluzewski and Walt Dropo models. There were bottle type bats about 34 inches long. Posted by White Tornado @ 5:26 PM 0 comments. ELMIRA AND OTHER PLACES. Saturday, August 06, 2005. I remember having an english class with Ms Daley. She was hard of hearing. The classrooms at that time had old telephones with a single flat earpiece and a conical microphone set up. At various times during the class we would all look up suddenly and mouth the word "phone". She would get up and answer the phone in increasingly louder voice. It was a great laugh at the time. Posted by White Tornado @ 6:57 AM 0 comments.

ELMIRA AND OTHER PLACES: Places I Remember
http://717speakeasy.blogspot.com/2006/01/places-i-remember.html
ELMIRA AND OTHER PLACES. Tuesday, January 24, 2006. I believe that was my first experience with the not in our house signature of athletics. I also fondly remember going to a big autograph signing at the neighb where I got the autograph of and pictures taken with Charley Silvera, Gil McDougald and Larry Doby. Unfortunately, these were taken from me by the Agnes flood. Thanks to Art Howe, I have a link to Chuck Jennings who was the man who ran the boxing program:. I remember him as a very kind man.
