Ink Smudges

St Sam used a typewriter; I use a fountain pen. 02 February, 2010. This was my monthly article for the parish newsletter in September of '08. Forgot to post it here, and it seems timely given the Colts are playing this Sunday. As we head back into the school year and the beginning of football season, this month’s margin smudges are in the pages of some light reading appropriate for this time of year:. Quiet Faith: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life. Links to this post. It's funny...

Ink Smudges: The Mathematics of Inevitability

http://schereschewsky.blogspot.com/2008/09/mathematics-of-inevitability.html

St Sam used a typewriter; I use a fountain pen. 25 September, 2008. The Mathematics of Inevitability. Sometimes, it really sucks being trained as an engineer. Two weeks ago Tuesday afternoon, I was packing to go to a conference in Corpus Christi, Texas. Then we got the word that the conference was postponed because of in impending hurricane. By Wednesday evening, the projections said that Ike would be directly overhead of us here in San Antonio on Sunday morning, as a category 1 or 2 hurricane. Just for ...

Ink Smudges: non-spiritual ranting: and the Oscar goes to...

http://schereschewsky.blogspot.com/2008/12/non-spiritual-ranting-and-oscar-goes-to.html

St Sam used a typewriter; I use a fountain pen. 17 December, 2008. Non-spiritual ranting: and the Oscar goes to. Then there was the presentation of the awards themselves. Just like today, there would be little clips from the movies that had been nominated, and then that moment of tension while the envelope was opened: “and the winner is…”. Do you want to know the best movie of 2005? It may even be the best science fiction movie ever made. Okay, enough waxing rhapsodic. I’ll bet you a nickel you can...

Ink Smudges: October 2007

http://schereschewsky.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

St Sam used a typewriter; I use a fountain pen. 31 October, 2007. The Lord has given us a son. We're going to call him. Mom and baby are still in the hospital. Pictures to follow when I get a chance. And a cool story or two. Links to this post. 18 October, 2007. Death of a preacher man. One of my seminary classmates died yesterday. That's one of those things you know is going happen eventually, but it's never welcome news when it gets to you. His name was Bill Wiseman. My feedback to him was this: in the...

Ink Smudges: More thoughts on college football

http://schereschewsky.blogspot.com/2009/12/more-thoughts-on-college-football.html

St Sam used a typewriter; I use a fountain pen. 11 December, 2009. More thoughts on college football. I wondered out loud at this time last year if this would be the year I quit caring about college football. Turns out I was right. Watching the Javelinas was like that this year. Okay, maybe we didn't make the first down and we have to punt, but Markeith made his block, did you see that? Second, let's just call it what it is. The BCS is not a playoff. It's a. Last year was a mess. Nine teams with a re...

Ink Smudges: out of hibernation?

http://schereschewsky.blogspot.com/2009/12/out-of-hibernation.html

St Sam used a typewriter; I use a fountain pen. 11 December, 2009. A recent request by our diocesan communications department to link to various bloggers. In the diocese made me realize that it's been almost a year since I wrote anything. The thing that pushed me over into the blogisphere. Was that I was already publishing things on the internet. So I figured, if I'm already publishing, I might as well write a blog. My rule was that I would post any newsletter article that might vaguely be interestin...

A little something extra. Thursday, October 27, 2005. Woody Guthrie and the radio. A few years ago, I dramaturged a production of a musical based on the life and music of Woody Guthrie. Before that I had a vague notion of who he was, but that show gave me a reason to read all his published work. His first published book,. Bound for Glory,. All this to say, I want to introduce you to the radio stations that are part of my daily life in SoCal. I wake up to Morning Edition on KPCC. The NPR station that broa...

A little something extra. Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Why are they not still on my radar of concern? The faith I profess makes me responsible for feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and comforting the sick, lost and imprisoned. Doing that is a lifetime gig, not a charge that ends when the news coverage tapers off. According to Mapquest, I'm sitting 1884.43 miles from the center of New Orleans. How, then, can I help from here? The International Red Cross. The American Friends Service Committee. A cubi...

A little something extra. Wednesday, November 30, 2005. A brief break from the spiritual stuff, to describe a delightful little holiday tradition that has grown up in my family. Once the nest was well and truly empty (and with five kids, that takes a while! For the first several years, the Advent gift was a five-gallon tin of gourmet popcorn. Already popped, that is. Five gallons of unpopped popcorn would make an almost unimaginable volume once it was popped! It must be acknowledged that I am no gardener...

A little something extra. Monday, February 20, 2006. The Pacific Chorale rehearses on Monday nights. Due to a series of work and travel conflicts, I've attended only about half of the rehearsals since New Year's. When I sang with PC last fall, I was unexpectedly placed in the lowest women's voice part. So when I came back this winter after the break, I rejoined at the same place. I am supposed to be singing the highest. On some double-choir stuff. Posted by meeegan @ 10:50 PM. Tuesday, February 14, 2006.

A little something extra. Friday, July 28, 2006. The things you run into in my line of work. Quick post from the work front: I'm writing a letter declining (for the second time) a particular play. I paged through the first few scenes to make sure I was remembering the play correctly, and found this prayer in a bit of dialogue between two central characters. The prayer is drawn from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church, and since I like it, I thought I'd post it. Monday, July 24, 2006.

A little something extra. Thursday, January 26, 2006. The Church of What's Happenin' Now, part 3 of whatever. I like the short prayer with which the Church of What's Happenin' Now closes each Sunday morning service. I've been meaning to post it for a while now, and since I have it at hand, here it is:. As the earth keeps turning, hurtling through space,. And night falls and day breaks from land to land,. Let us remember people, waking, sleeping, being born and dying -. Partly organized by this guy. A little something extra. Wednesday, December 28, 2005. Do not combat grumpiness with alcohol. Words to live by. Alcohol is a depressant, and grumpy people don't need further depressing! Thus, I am doctoring my working-too-many-12-hour-days, no-money, no-social-life, desperately-needs-a-haircut grumpy self with pizza (currently in the oven). If that doesn't do the trick, chocolate will follow. Posted by meeegan @ 10:02 PM. Tuesday, December 27, 2005. Posted by meeegan @ 8:46 PM. It's winter solstice, a g...

A little something extra. Friday, May 26, 2006. I would have to go considerably further east to get into actual MO. But, here is some mo'. So, yeah. I'm not spending so much time soaking in the small-town deliciousness and ecumenical but extremely sincere spirituality of New Harmony. But I'm doing what I came here to do, doing it well (so far, knock wood) and hoping to make more opportunities to do it in more places in the future. Posted by meeegan @ 7:34 PM. http://lagniappeca.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html

A little something extra. Wednesday, March 29, 2006. This was another of the major projects I finished off last week, but it became so surrealistically complicated that it deserves its own post. It's even more surrealistic than the lemon. Really. Once upon a time, in October 2005, I set up an appointment to get my California driver's license and register my car. Or so I thought. When I arrived for my appointment, they had no record of my having requested. Services. They were only prepared to provide.

Jakarta, 8 februari 2015. We zitten alweer in 2015.
