Rice Harvesting in Kamikatsu. After harvesting and bundling the rice with straw from a previous harvest, we layed the bundles out to dry over bamboo racks in the field. Harvesting rice with a small Japanese hand sickle. This goat was hungry for my pants! We decided to bag the muck boots for the real barefoot rice paddy experience. Felt great. Making mochi (pounded rice) at a street fair in Matsuyama. This 7-year old girl was very sweetly trying to sell us a cold mug of beer. Black Garlic. Comes out of the ground jet black! Hole through which samurai would shoot arrows or guns at enemy intruders. Dogo Onsen. The hot springs bathhouse in Spirited Away was modeled after this building. So root, root, root for the home team. Go Hiroshima Carp! The A-Bomb Dome. A chilling sight. We couldn’t get over this huge silver butt fountain. Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park. These adorable students asked us questions in English about where we were from and gave us peace crane origami bracelets. Hiroshima has a special kind of okonomiyaki, or Japanese savory pancake. It combines soba noodles, egg, cabbage, seafood, bacon and a mochi pounded rice cake. Delicious! It was filed under Uncategorized.
