School Effectively At Home

When They "Refuse" to Do Anything. My daughter wants to watch tv and play on her tablet. I tell her she can do that when she completes X amount of lessons that day. She doesn't manage to complete the lessons, it gets too late, she goes to bed and now the next day she is behind and instead of realizing she didn't get to do her activity she equates it to failure and then refuses to do anything the next day? What do I do? There are a couple of words that stand out to me while reading this question: " manage.

School Effectively At Home: Practice makes perfect? You decide.

http://schooleffectivelyathome.blogspot.com/2013/10/practice-makes-perfect-you-decide.html

It was one of the last evenings of summer. We had a lot of extended family staying with us for the weekend. So we thought it would be a perfect time to play. Teams were divided and the game began! There came a point when tempers. And "That's not fair! Was the cry from both teams. As one of the adults playing, I'd like to think. That I was above the petty tantrums. That were taking place.but. I started to get annoyed and heated as well. The game came to a swift end. With players on both sides quitting.

School Effectively At Home: Zookeeper, Prison Warden or Learning Coach?

http://schooleffectivelyathome.blogspot.com/2011/09/zookeeper-prison-warden-or-learning.html

Zookeeper, Prison Warden or Learning Coach? What is your job and how would you. In the business world we use job descriptions to. And evaluate employee performance. At home we want to know pretty much the same things! The value of a job description is mostly for me. My kids will either get it or not. But I want to wake up each morning knowing. What I should and should not. I also want to lay my head down on my pillow. At night knowing that I did my job. So what does my job as a learning coach look like?

School Effectively At Home: Thanks For Being Awesome

http://schooleffectivelyathome.blogspot.com/2011/09/thanks-for-being-awesome.html

Thanks For Being Awesome. We've been discussing in our School Effectively at Home Workshops how important those precious few hours a day are when energy and production level is high for both student and. Effective learning coaches know that it takes just as much energy to be positive. As it does to be negative. So let's spend our time being positive! Instead of nagging kids to listen or begging kids to get back to work, we can set the expectation. Thanks for being fun to be around! Thanks for being kind.

School Effectively At Home: Avoiding School Work

http://schooleffectivelyathome.blogspot.com/2011/11/avoiding-school-work.html

Workshop, we addressed how to help kids who avoid their school work. To begin with, going through the Daily Plan each morning or the night before is very important. For an Avoider, you might even expand that idea with a flow chart or hourly schedule. They need to see all the things that they DO. Schedule breakfast, lunch and dinner and all other extracurricular activities. The principle is that they see where the time is spent. Here is a great printable,. If you need a head start. The Cross Family: Field Trips Starting!

http://k12family.blogspot.com/2010/09/field-trips-starting.html

Monday, September 27, 2010. One thing I love about K12 are the fabulous field trips. There's already been a couple activities, but October will give us the opportunity for an outing pretty much every week. That's one of the greatest advantages homeschooling offers, isn't it? And K12 does it beautifully. For Charlie to see a cardiologist who specializes in Marfan's syndrom. Then on Wednesday both the boys will see their allergist for help with asthma and allergies. Then the zoo on Friday. School Effective...

The Cross Family: Book Review ~ The Unmotivated Child

http://k12family.blogspot.com/2010/11/book-review-unmotivated-child.html

Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Book Review The Unmotivated Child. The Unmotivated Child: Helping Your Underachiever Become a Successful Student. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. I've read a lot of parenting books and a lot of schooling books (I school my two boys at home) and I've finally found the book that describes my child. He didn't quite fit with the ADD profiles, nor any of the other psychological acronyms that would help me understand why my boy would break down in tears over a math problem. The Unmotivated ...

The Cross Family: Happy Mom Moments

http://k12family.blogspot.com/2010/11/happy-mom-moments.html

Monday, November 8, 2010. This weekend we attended a Bobby Lawrence Karate. Tournament. The boys have taken karate for four years, even David and I did it for a couple years. Xander has competed at each of the two tournaments every years since they started. And for the first couple years, Charlie competed too. When it came time for Charlie to perform, I held my breath. I wanted so much for him and was so afraid for him. His turn came up. And Charlie did GREAT. And, he won third place for self-defense!

The Cross Family: February 2009

http://k12family.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 26, 2009. I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the reading bug has finally bitten Charlie! Something you may not know about me: I am a wannabe author, a full time writer, a dreamer, a nut. But the good news is that my obsession puts me in touch with tons of awesome authors and sometimes I get to read their stuff before the average book-store going, library book borrowing person gets to read them. . Such was the case with Xander. A Door In The Woods, and said, "Here, try this.".

The Cross Family: October 2010

http://k12family.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 25, 2010. I finally figured out Order of Operations! All this time, and the order of operations was a mystery to me. I almost always got them wrong, and when I didn't, I had no idea how I did it. You're kind of forced to face your own demons and step waaaayyy outside your comfort zone in order to help your child. I've learned more about grammar than I even knew existed. (Shh. Yes, I'm a writer, but I didn't know what it was called when I left a participle dangling! But now I know that and.

The Cross Family: April 2009

http://k12family.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 17, 2009. In any good relationship, it's all about the compromise. And home schooling is no different. You compromise when you'll do school and when you'll play. House work and school work. It's a relationship. Of agreements and compromise. And sometimes when we compromise, we have to give up something we'd hoped for and be happy with something else. . I really wanted to have all of our subjects completed to the required 80% by May 22 nd. I really enjoy home schooling, but I don't enjoy fee...

Monday, June 8, 2009. I apologize for being a fair-weather blogger. But probably my lack of blogging about our school experiences is a good indicator of what’s going on here. Nothing. Oh, we met our 80% benchmark and were able to put in our order for next year’s materials. However, we so far are not doing what I intended to do, and that was to continue. In the meantime, these are the things I’m thinking about:. Do some research into how to be a better homeschooling mom. LC. I think that might be the bigg...
