A Garden Year: May 2012

http://schoolgardenyear.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 10, 2012. First, admire our fabulous new bean teepee, then read about our day…. It’s getting warmer, with that energizing spring heat, and we are all glad to be back out in the garden after the last week of standardized tests. For the morning, we must all band together to get those tomatoes into the ground! As I expected, the whining sets in, just about when I call them back to the task at hand. 8220;It’s soooo hot.”. 8220;But, but, but.”. Whine, dig, complain, lose focus… but eventua...

A Garden Year: January 2012

http://schoolgardenyear.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 27, 2012. How to harvest broccoli. Okay, truth is, this week they were. Wild Child and Wild Child was so wild that I am still recovering and have zero energy for blogging. But I probably don’t need to say what happened in garden class to the rest of you third grade parents since you are the ones at home scrubbing out the mud-soaked clothes and silt-swamped shoes…. Unless your kids was in this group of kids who managed to move a bunch of compost without getting drenched:. We are cutting ba...

A Garden Year: March 2011

http://schoolgardenyear.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 21, 2011. I’d love to tell you more about how great it was, how the kids followed the waterflow around the campus, learned about the water cycle, and molded huge slabs of clay into mountains and streams flowing into wetland sponges on their way to the ocean. But, um, I seem to have missed even the parts I was present for: most of my attention was monopolized by Wild Child. He’s only nine. Can his armor really be this thick already? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Who is Wild Child? 8221; you ask.

A Garden Year: October 2011

Friday, October 28, 2011. 8220;There’s too much work to leave it behind,” I say. “Shall we watch the game as we shuck? We don’t eat the corn we are harvesting today, not yet, though the kids all taste kernels. But it IS corn harvest day, after all, so the teacher has found (Bill’s Farm Basket, oh ye locals) the kind of popcorn that is sold still on the cob. The kids carefully separate the kernels from the cob—watch out! Location: Sebastopol, CA 95472, USA. Thursday, October 20, 2011. A half hour before w...

A Garden Year: The Three “S”es

http://schoolgardenyear.blogspot.com/2012/03/three-ses.html

Friday, March 16, 2012. The Three “S”es. Kind of like the three R’s (you know, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), but wetter. Our follow-up to our first hands-on rainy-day watershed lesson is our ever-popular boots-on rainy-day watershed lesson. How do you help the rainwater replenish the aquifer and not all just escape to the sea? First, we follow the water. All over the campus, down drains and through pipes and across the field, down through the garden. And we see which one would allow the salmon to spawn safely.

a million tiny things: Earth Day Birthdays

http://milliontinythings.blogspot.com/2012/04/earth-day-birthdays.html

A million tiny things. Sunday, April 22, 2012. Earth Day always lurks on my calendar, ready to jump out with a big “Boo! Did you save the Earth this year? Being saddled with an eco-obsessed mother, now, that. Drive too much, so. Should remember to turn off the water. What? It makes sense to me, um, sort of, in a twisted kind of way. Or, for that matter, so much cultural neurosis? It seems like the consensus out there, by now, is pretty much “Let’s do it! Let’s save the planet! Carpool to work, right?

http://milliontinythings.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

A million tiny things. Monday, December 26, 2011. A million tiny “no”s. Lucky for me, I had two bits of perspective. One: there wasn’t much money in my bank account, a common occurrence since the divorce. My daily checking thereof NOT usually something I like to admit to, but when it’s Christmas Eve and your little kids are making their Santa snacks at a home in which you are not welcome, Facebook really doesn’t feel like so much of a time-waster. More like a life-saving time-filler. My hands, seemingly ...

A million tiny things. Sunday, May 13, 2012. It makes me incredibly happy when people have this response to the book:. A million tiny things. Friday, August 10, 2012. This summer in London, there are hundreds of strong bodies doing their very best, showing their vast dedication and hard work to the world, or at least that part of the world which watches TV. Or am I showing my age? 8220;I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never, never let you forget you’re a man… cause I’m a woman…”. Really, not for another month.
