The Keydet Piper gets a new sole | Keydet Piper
https://keydetpiper.wordpress.com/2013/08/04/the-keydet-piper-gets-a-new-sole
A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. The Keydet Piper gets a new sole. About five years ago, I bought a practice chanter that I quite like. It’s a regular length blackwood model made by Duncan Soutar. And for the price (less than $100 US at the time) I’m convinced there’s not a better blackwood chanter available. It has served me very well since then, and if some catastrophe were to render it unplayable, I would attempt to replace it with the same model. A few weeks ago I ...

A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. What motivates you to compete? A friend of mine is working on an academic paper, and recently asked me what motivates me to compete. I’m not doing as many solo competitions as I did in the past, but it’s still a valid question. There has been a lot of discussion on the merits and drawbacks of competition, but that’s not the topic of this post. The question was simply this: What motivates you to compete? My response to him was this:.

Reflections on 15 years of piping | Keydet Piper
https://keydetpiper.wordpress.com/2013/08/18/reflections-on-15-years-of-piping
A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. Reflections on 15 years of piping. Some of the best pipers and bands around. I will say that I was extremely fortunate to have been taught correctly. My first instructor, Burt Mitchell, is an incredibly talented piper who was himself taught by some damn fine pipers. It’s thanks to him, in no small way, that piping has been as important to me as it has for the last 15 years. But most of all, I’ve enjoyed the simple act of playing&#...

A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. My bagpipes were made by Peter Henderson in the late 1940s. They are very simply appointed with wooden projecting mounts, nickel ferrules, and imitation ivory drone caps that have turned orange over time. Chanter with Shepherd reed, and an adjustable blowpipe from Peter Crisler. Pipe major john anderson. September 10, 2010 at 4:48 am. November 7, 2010 at 6:55 am. November 7, 2010 at 7:00 am. Don’t miss the Worlds! | Keydet Piper

A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. Don’t miss the Worlds! Weekend, and as far as I’m aware the grade 1 contest is again being streamed live around the world. This year the format is different, with all grade 1 bands playing a medley and an MSR in a qualifying heat on Saturday and the top 6 bands in each heat playing another medley and MSR contest on Sunday. There’s been a lot of discussion about this new format, including some criticism. Courtesy of Pipe Band Jungle.

A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. In the hands of a skilled musician the pipes lend a magical and surreal flavor to any gathering, and there’s no event where they are out of place. Check out my Sound Samples. Page to get an idea of the kinds of tunes I can play. Below is a short list of the type of events where you might have a piper, but this is by no means a complete list. If you can think of an occasion, we can add bagpipes! Weddings and renewal of vows. You are comm...

Piping Quest | Keydet Piper

A thoughtful look at the world of bagpipes and bagpipe competitions. Within a year after I started playing pipes, my band involvement had taken me to a good portion of the east coast of the United States, as well as a month-long trip to Scotland. I realized the potential for travel, and thus set the goal for myself to play my pipes in each of the 50 Unites States. First: Virginia (April 1999). Most recent: Washington (June 2013). Below is a list of each state I’ve hit, with the event, city, and date.
