Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Seasons 2014 - A Great Start! Cold frames gave a great start to radishes, turnips, lettuce, and bok choy. Peas were planted twice, and still nothing doing. Perhaps this weekend we will see some peas sprouting. Left-hand side has neat rows of 10 types of beans, carrots, parsnips, Swiss chard, and kale. We also reinforced the strawberries with some additional plants, and they are covered with flowers. Overall, it has been a good start to spring, now that it has finally arrived.

We received our mail order last Tuesday of young asparagus roots, Egyptian onions, fingerling potatoes, and a Honeyberry bush. Since they can stay in the fridge no more than a week, we planted them all. A few inches of rain this week will give them a great start. Let the 2014 gardening season begin! Posted by Haley's Comet. Sunday, August 28, 2011. The Garden Chronicles August 28, 2011 - The BIG Harvests of 2011. The improved weather of the last few weeks accounted for HUGE yields this week. These photos show just some of the incredible harvests of fruit and veggies, all from our backyard. Yellow and green beans, yellow squash, three kinds of tomatoes, Swiss chard. The garden bunnies didn't get any of the kale, chard, mint or basil. One of the best grape harvests ever, and sweeter than last year's. Posted by Haley's Comet.

Monday, May 30, 2011. The Garden Chronicles May 30, 2011 - The Garden Plot. The lettuce planted a month ago is just about ready to harvest. This 30-day variety is perfect for starting the season early. The rhubarb expanded this spring and is very early. I will harvest some tomorrow for a friend whose wife bakes pies. Black currants are starting to form. All three currant bushes look great. We will have an abundance of currants in June/July (black, red, and champagne). We noticed today a volunteer cucumbe...

Sunday, February 23, 2014. Seasons 2014 - The View Outside; The View Within. Last Thursday night a foot of snow fell upon us, and our backyard lit by a streetlamp looks much like a snow globe. By morning, the trees were thick with snow. Beautiful, but now challenging: Where to put more snow? In all the years we have lived here, we have never seen the snow this high in our yard, covering the raspberry bushes and completely hidden in this photo are the cold frames under what is now 2-3 foot drifts of snow.

Sunday, July 31, 2011. The Garden Chronicles July 31, 2011 - Catching Up and Weeds Be Gone! Record-setting heat, humidity and rain this summer led to record-setting weed growth in the vegetable and flower beds. We can barely keep up with them all. Our strawberry bed gave us small but sweet fruit, and the currant bushes were heavier with fruit than during our drought years. Here are the squash and cucumber plants. In the front yard, the black-eyed susans are this week's show of our street. The Garden Chro...

Saturday, March 29, 2014. Seasons 2014 - Ready for Planting Already. The indoor garden expanded this winter to include baby portabella mushrooms. This is our third round of mushrooms from one kit. This brutal winter may have been hard on us but the houseplants have been amazingly happy. Our Christmas cactus started blooming again this week to welcome spring. We visited a wonderful bookseller today that specializes in gardening publications of all types: Terrace Horticultural Books. Posted by Haley's Comet.
