This forge, although crude and short lived, was the first forge in the colony, and would stimulate many other forges that would allow Pennsylvania to become, in time, the Birmingham of modern civilization. When the Schuylkill Naviation Company built ‘the locks’ a small village developed supported by the commerce possible due to the canal traffic. Prior the canal’s opening in 1825 it was expected that 10,000 tons of coal would be shipped on the canal. By the 1850’s more than 1,000,000 tons of coal was being shipped!
