Idea Behind Podcast |

Rediscovering Science Fiction Classics. Index, by Author. Science fiction had a difficult time establishing itself as a genre. The only places mid-20th century science fiction appeared in print was in certain magazines and dimestore paperbacks and serials. While we are lucky that many of these stories are still around, it’s hard for someone sifting through this jumbled mess to know what’s a gem and what’s not worth reading. How do you know which ones are which? Or just a product of their time. And find o...

Monday, May 6, 2013. Watching All the Cars Go By. Since the weather has been warmer, Henry and I have been going outside every evening before dinner. Most kids would probably run around in the grass or throw a ball around, but do you know what Henry likes to do? This picture was taken by one of Henry's school teachers. And I think she really caught his essence. Henry is looking out a window at who knows what, but he sure seems to be deep in thought. So what new tricks has Henry learned in the last month?
One Geek's Mind: January 2013

Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Henry's a Year Old Already. The whole time Carol and I were whispering to each other "I think he might be too smart for his own good." I mean I know I use the term genius all the time, but what if he really is? It's all part of the adventure I guess. I'd like to take a moment to thank our family and friends. We keep telling you Henry doesn't need anything and you keep buying us stuff or giving us hand-me-downs. And you know what? We end up using the majority of what we get!

Monday, December 8, 2014. Baby, It’s Cold Outside. Frank Loesser and Lynn Garland. The older I get Christmas is less and less about presents and more about, family, friends, a long road trip home, that hopeful feeling which accompanies the season, the cold winter weather, snow, hot chocolate, and of course Christmas music. On Pandora, I’ve got a station called White Christmas Radio and I can put that on and hear great Christmas tunes whenever I want. I mean let’s all be adults here the Wolf is tryi...

Sunday, November 18, 2012. How Henry Gets His Beauty Rest. A future bookworm like his dad, right? Well, I can dream. Henry has had a really bad cold for the last few days. He’ll start screaming in the middle of the night because he can’t breath through his nose and one of us will have to go in there and snake out his nose. How do you snake a baby’s nose? Imagine finding a way to get what you want, keep your parents up half the night, and still get your beauty rest. Labels: Personal; Henry. In 1989, the j...

Thursday, February 28, 2013. A Year's Worth of Comic Book Banners. Last May I started making banners for a comic book message board that I'm a member of the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages Message Board. I'm a co-moderator there. :). Anyway, as you will see, at first I didn't know what I was doing and could barely use Photoshop. But I am slowly learning. Oh, the other thing that needs to be understood is that I post under the nickname of Paste Pot Pete. Why? Shane, a fellow banner maker, did a better tak...

Thursday, June 27, 2013. Caution: Genius at Play. Henry is thinking "why won't this train go? Henry's vocabulary is improving. Sometimes he still points at things and says "Daddy, daddy" and we say no, Henry that's a wall or that's a potted plant, that isn't Daddy. But he also says "Mommy," "No! His favorite word), "Beep, Beep! So eventually, I start quizzing him. He has a book with various farm animals and some of the pages have many different animals on them so I say "which one is the pig? These three ...

Negotiating science fiction, film and other things. Sunday, 26 July 2015. Beating the bounds: misreading Iain Sinclair. My sense of Iain Sinclair’s recent book, London Overground: A Day’s Walk Around the Ginger Line. History, he said, was pigs’ bollocks dipped in sherbert. But if you want to listen to … Arthur Morrison, A Child of the Jago. Tales of Mean Streets. Arnold Circus, Charles Dickens, furniture sweatshops, bagels and … blah blah blah: OK fine. Each to his own. But these are not. The problem her...
