Chile is not a Pepper

Chile is not a Pepper. An ignorant American's adventures abroad. Monday, August 29, 2011. Patagonia: Tierra del Fuego. The land of fire. Tierra del Fuego. The second reason to see the south. The last place I would see Chile. The farthest shore in the world. When I climbed aboard the ferry, the anticipation was unbearable. Brain and waited abovedecks while watching the crossing into the last island. As we got closer we could make out more detail of the place. Dolphins lead the way. The way back was faster...

Chile is not a Pepper: June 2011

http://www.scienceinsantiago.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Chile is not a Pepper. An ignorant American's adventures abroad. Thursday, June 30, 2011. The protest posts were supposed to go up today, but I didn't get a chance to work on it. Personal issues intervened. I'll start and finish them tomorrow. There's a lot of ground I have to cover, so it will be a two parter. Goodnight everybody. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. I can't expect miracles from it. Always buy fruits from the same guys. Always buy veggies from teh same girls. Establish rapport with the sho...Merca...

Chile is not a Pepper: July 2011

http://www.scienceinsantiago.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Chile is not a Pepper. An ignorant American's adventures abroad. Sunday, July 31, 2011. I've had enough of hiking for a while and wanted to spend a quiet day exploring the city. Getting 6 of us together would make 'quiet' physically impossible, so we decided to play it low key. Brian and Peter and I spend our Saturday exploring the local fort and artisan fair. I was an idiot and forgot my camera, so in true cause-and-effect fashion this post won't have any pictures. Tuesday, July 26, 2011. I lied. Su...

Chile is not a Pepper: Atacama: Crystal Valley

http://www.scienceinsantiago.blogspot.com/2011/08/atacama-crystal-valley.html

Chile is not a Pepper. An ignorant American's adventures abroad. Saturday, August 13, 2011. I didn't wake up sick today, unless you count "opening my eyes and finding there's a cat on my face" to mean 'sick'. He immediately jumped off and started trying to eat my glasses. Go figure. I scarfed down the remainder of last night's dinner and hopped in the van, ready to be taken to the third and final place on our itinerary. Two more weeks then I'm back in the US. But first comes five days in Patagonia&#4...

Chile is not a Pepper: Patagonia: Torres del Paine

http://www.scienceinsantiago.blogspot.com/2011/08/patagonia-torres-del-paine.html

Chile is not a Pepper. An ignorant American's adventures abroad. Friday, August 26, 2011. Patagonia: Torres del Paine. I'm sure they say it's the Myrmidon cave to make the tigers more interesting, not the cave. We had not even reached the park yet. The mountains were still a backdrop on the landscape, and we couldn't even see the main towers yet. Then we arrived in the place proper. I clambered over the railings and get as close as I dare. Glaciers are responsible for the entire park. After this we split...

Chile is not a Pepper: Descent into Decadence

http://www.scienceinsantiago.blogspot.com/2011/08/descent-into-decadence.html

Chile is not a Pepper. An ignorant American's adventures abroad. Monday, August 15, 2011. It occurred to me yesterday that I have almost no sense for local food. I've been making my own lunch and dinners. Up till now we've eaten out maybe once every other week, rarely in a place that really showcases the food. I do know a bit about the street food, the fast food, and the pub food. Specifically, I know. It's trying to kill me. Don't get what I mean? Churros: Make dough. Top with sugar. Deep fry. Mayo is o...

If velocity increases relativistic mass then why do we run to lose weight? As some of you may know, I'm spending the summer doing physics research in Chile. For those of you who don't know, I'm spending the summer doing physics research in Chile. The admin knew I'm fond of writing and asked me to keep a record blog of my time. I also have a recipe one coming up soon. 8220; In the final analysis, it is between you and G-d; it was never between you and them anyway.”. Sorry about the lack of posts recently. The thoughts and observations of a rather talkative man. Sunday, January 29, 2012. Idiotproof Pumpkin Chocolate-Chip Bread. On request of Douglas Graebner. I've made this easy pastry a few times. 15 oz canned or pureed pumpkin. 1 1/4 cups flour. 1/4 tsp baking powder. 1/3-1/2 cup chocolate chips (depends on taste). 1 Preheat the oven to 375F. Grease a 9x9 cake pan. 2 Put the pumpkin in a large bowl - if it's canned, you need to stir it around a bit. 3 Add the milk and eggs and mix well. That's not to say...

Don't worry, next post will be religiously themed on Obama's "you didn't build that comment.". I made this cake for some care packages I sent out, and it was surprisingly good! Lemon-Rosemary Cake with Olive Oil (Pareve). Based on my own recipe for lemon shortbread and my obsession with rosemary as a seasoning.

I'm not sure what overcame me, but I'm doing a test run of keeping my head covered for a few days. That means that when I'm out of the dorm, and I'm not wearing a hat, I'm wearing a kippah. And if I'm not wearing a kippah, I'm wearing a hat. Notes from the first two days:. When you're not used to it, keeping your head covered all the time is kinda uncomfortable.

I will write up an update once I've got time for the very long update that will be required. I went to a vegan friend's apartment last Friday night for Shabbos dinner with two other friends of mine from various aspects of my life. I made a vegan potato kugel for the occasion. Ashley (the vegan) liked it a lot and wanted the recipe, so here it is! 1 1/2 tsp salt.

The thoughts and observations of a rather talkative man. Sunday, October 14, 2012. Du må studere et fremmedspråk. 别说“没有时间。”. Everyone needs to learn a second language. I don't care if all you want to do is stay in the United States and study English-language stuff. There's also the fact that it makes you more employable, staves off Alzheimer's, is fun, makes research easier.the list goes on and on. Anecdote: I've watched a 40-year-old monoglot gain strong proficiency in French in a year. Everyone speaks ...
