Advantages & Disadvantages. Lens care & handling. Keratoconus often only becomes evident after puberty. In less than 10% of patients, the condition is hereditary. People with keratoconus often also suffer from allergies or eczema and have sensitive, itchy eyes. Ongoing research is being conducted in order to provide alternatives to corneal transplants. Wearing times tend to differ among patients; some will feel the need to clean the lenses more than once a day due to possible deposits, while many wear the lenses all day without removing them. Scleral lenses should not be worn for any longer than has been recommended, nor should they ever be worn overnight. To begin with, the lenses should be worn in two phases per day. Wearing time may be increased by half an hour each day. Day 1: 2 x 1 hour.

Advantages & Disadvantages. Lens care & handling. There are two methods available for lens removal. Method 1: using the index finger (FIGURE 15). Work over a soft clean towel to prevent dropping the lens onto a hard surface. Keep your head up and look downwards towards your chin. Keep one hand ready to catch the lens when it falls during removal. Method 2: using a suction holder (FIGURE 16). Wet the end of the suction holder with saline solution.
