An American Explorer

Tuesday, July 21, 2015. I’ve owned many over the years—climbing ropes, cords, lines, klettertau. As a teenager, I was perversely proud of my first real climbing rope, an 11mm in bright yellow. With that thick snake coiled fat and heavy over my shoulder, I was a climber, by God. Ignore the tall, gangly, mettle-mouthed kid awash in insecurity. Yeah, I’m a climber. I had knickers, too, for a while, obsessed as I was with the world of classical European alpine climbing. And his mother was Swiss. The Northwes...

An American Explorer: January 2014

http://www.scott-waylandadventures.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 10, 2014. The miles and adventures, setbacks and discoveries have built up over the weeks. Jodi has found the climbing often difficult, mostly due to an on-going thyroid issue she is struggling to resolve, and now, for extra delight, she’s been battling a cold, lots of stuffed sinuses and general grog. By mysterious chance I seem to have dodged her viral bullet. I’ve been managing my injuries pretty well. Our celestial bodies have celestial bodies! We dropped the gear beneath a well-featu...

An American Explorer: Gear Talk: East Side Tour notes

http://www.scott-waylandadventures.blogspot.com/2015/06/gear-talk-east-side-tour-notes.html

Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Gear Talk: East Side Tour notes. This is just a quick post to review some gear selections and issues from the recent tour. Above are the two totally new pieces of gear used on their first tour: a Thermarest Neoair Trekker. And the super fantastic Instaflator! Which I can't recommend enough. My back can't take sitting on the ground without support for long periods, and the chair kit makes rest days especially restful. Solar charger, which I highly recommend. I'm not sure these ar...

An American Explorer: April 2015

http://www.scott-waylandadventures.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 30, 2015. But that wasn't going to happen. I had good holds, I was calm and collected, and there, just above, was a beautiful knob. I made the reach, slipping my fingers over the top- fantastic. It had a lip as if designed by the gods for climbing. With a quick heave, I'd be even with the anchors and ready to clip for a quick lower back to the ground. I pressed down firmly on the heavenly knob, shifted most of my weight to that left hand, hand hoisted with confidence. SNAP! Click on blog ...

Sunday, March 29, 2015. Catrike in the Wild. Friday, March 20, 2015. Spring flowers on the drive home:. Sunday, March 8, 2015. About to head out on a quick hike with Jo and the hound then it's down to business with a big stack of papers. Gotta pay for the adventures somehow. Sunday, March 1, 2015. A (very) little snow. Day 05 | Trike Phantoms

https://trikephantoms.wordpress.com/day-by-day/day-5

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 07, 2013, Saturday. Trees of Mystery to Patrick’s Point State Park, California. 40 miles (running total = 250 miles). Patrick’s Point is one of the best overnights on the entire Pacific Coast if you hit the weather right, as we are doing today. September is my recommended month, but keep in mind, on overland trike journeys, the only certainty is uncertainty! There are absolutely no guarantees. GO TO NEXT PAGE. All energy is on...

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 09, 2013, Monday. Stafford RV Park to Richardson Grove State Park, California. 47 miles (running total = 356 miles). That same man who stared at me going in, now exits the store. He asks me in a very zombie like monotone voice, staring blankly into my eyes with his nonblinking and expressionless eyes. I realize my description here borders on what you may consider overreacting, but I assure you of its accuracy. GO TO NEXT PAGE.

Day 18 | Trike Phantoms

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 20, 2013, Friday. Big Sur State Park to San Simeon State Park, California. 70 miles (running total = 836 miles). Tomorrow will be a short day, but after 70 miles today, I would sure like to sleep soundly, especially since it is the final night in my tent as a trike gypsy. If these creatures have such a superior sense of smell, to be able to smell Clif Bars, which are wrapped in their own sealed wrapper, which are then sealed i...

Day 06 | Trike Phantoms

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 08, 2013, Sunday. Patrick’s Point State Park to Stafford RV Park (2 miles north of Avenue of the Giants), California. 59 miles (running total = 309 miles). The road dead-ends into nothing, meaning that all our endurance of this gauntlet was for naught, especially considering that David feels miserable to begin with due to his infection, and this agony has only magnified his suffering! Lucky for us there is a short road that le...

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 14, 2013, Saturday. Bodega Dunes State Beach to Golden Gate Bridge, California (north end, southern Sausalito). 68 miles (running total = 596 miles). I joke around with Bert and Vic, asking them if they are worried about bed bugs in the hostel. Bert answers, We are now! All my cycling pals are already eating their dinners, cozy and ready to bed down in their tents at the Samuel P. Taylor State Park campground, while I&#821...

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 13, 2013, Friday. Gualala Point Regional Park to Bodega Dunes State Beach, California. 48 miles (running total = 528 miles). I pass through the Fort Ross State Historic Park, which used to be a Russian settlement in the early history of California. The old fort buildings are still here, overlooking the ocean. Highway 1 always has surprises, but what is never a surprise is that next hill waiting just around the corner! Jerry Fo...

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 05, 2013, Thursday. Humbug Mountain State Park to Harris Beach State Park, Brookings, Oregon. 49 miles (running total = 166 miles). David surely wonders what happened to me again, as a while farther on, there he waits as I finally pull up. This afternoon, we reach and cross the Thomas Creek Bridge, the highest bridge in Oregon, at 345 feet elevation above the ocean below it. David crosses first in the ample shoulder lane, ...

On the OCEAN HIGHWAY. Thoughts – After The Journey. What to Avoid …. September 21, 2013, Saturday. San Simeon State Park to Atascadero, California. 39 miles (running total = 875 miles from Florence, Oregon journey complete). Most folks are embarrassed to discuss such topics. Oh well, I guess they can get their bags opened by invaders of the night then. Of course, depending on the circumstances of the trike/bike camp, this countermeasure may not be a practical one. Remember the night at Gualal...Our tents...

Monday, June 21, 2010. A new WOW, Game-Changing technology. Right now is a fun time to be in the hearing healthcare business. Hearing aid technology is advancing at a rapid pace, enabling us to provide better results and higher patient satisfaction ratings than ever before. Less frequently, we see new “game changing” technology. In the 11 years I’ve been in this business, I’ve seen a handful of truly game-changing improvements.
